Although good rainfall was observed over the Greater Horn of Africa in late November and early December, the delayed onset of the October December rainy season, combined with an erratic distribution of rains during the season, has already negatively impacted ground conditions in northern Kenya and southern Somalia. As the season is coming to an end, a recovery is unlikely.

10 December 10 2014, Santiago, Chile - Latin America and the Caribbean have achieved 92 percent progress toward the the World Food Summit goal of halving the total number of people suffering hunger and final push is needed to fully achieve it, according to FAO's regional flagship report, the Panorama of Food and Nutritional Security 2014, released today.
Low and poorly distributed seasonal Deyr rains have led to growing moisture deficits and deteriorating ground conditions throughout several local areas of southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, and coastal Tanzania. The persistence of below-average rainfall in November is likely to reduce crop growth and limit the regeneration of pasture.

Santiago de Chile, 3 de noviembre de 2014 – La inflación alimentaria de América Latina y el Caribe ha aumentado de forma continua desde junio, alcanzando 1.2% en septiembre, uno de los valores más altos en lo que va de 2014, señaló hoy la FAO.

El impacto de la canícula extendida de los meses de julio y agosto en el corredor seco sigue presente, pese a que la ocurrencia de lluvias en el mes de octubre ha tendido a estabilizarse. En algunos lugares, producto de la formación de tormentas y huracanes se han producido inundaciones lo cual también ha provocado daño en las siembras postreras e incluso cobrado vidas humanas, por lo que las acciones para atender la crisis alimentaria que se cierne sobre la región continúa de parte de los gobiernos del área.
Bridgetown, Barbados, October 31, 2014 (CDEMA) - Disaster Management in the Caribbean region is getting a boost with a 20 million euro grant from the European Union. The funding has been secured under the ACP-EU CARIFORUM Natural Disaster Risk Management Programme, which will be implemented over a five year period (2014-2019) by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Caribbean Development Bank and the Dominican Republic.

Below-average rains during the Belg season and a late onset of the Kiremt rains have led to persistent moisture deficits, which have delayed planting and negatively affected the development of already-planted crops in the Arsi and West Arsi zones of central Ethiopia.

Smallholder coffee farmers in Mesoamerica face formidable challenges, including highly variable coffee prices, increasing climate change impacts, and worsening outbreaks of pests and diseases, which contribute to chronic debt and food insecurity. Despite these difficulties, the results of a recent follow-up or longitudinal survey show improvement in key aspects of farmers’ livelihoods, though there is an urgent need to continue working with farmers on these issues.
