In Cox„s Bazar, Sirajganj and Kurigram district, flood has caused serious damage to local livelihood, economy and infrustructure. A total of 5,000 people are affected by flood in 8 districts. In this critical situation, Red Crescent Youth (RCY) in the mentioned affected districts has provided crucial support for affeacted people through distributing cash, conducting relief activities and delivering primary health care services. Respective ULOs, representatives of Frderation and Unit Youth members have worked collectively in relief activities.

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

While global poverty fell during the 1990s, the numbers of urban poor people rose (Ravallion, Chen and Sangraula 2007). In many developing countries more than half the urban population lives below the national poverty line. Recent economic crisis has made their situation worse, causing many urban families to cut expenditure on food and children’s education. Many of the urban poor live in extremely poor conditions, in informal settlements with limited access to services. Both government-run services and non-governmental organizations tend to neglect the urban poor.

The Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) is a new survey-based index designed to measure the empowerment, agency, and inclusion of women in the agricultural sector. The WEAI was initially developed as a tool to reflect women’s empowerment that may result from the United States government’s Feed the Future Initiative, which commissioned the development of the WEAI. The WEAI can also be used more generally to assess the state of empowerment and gender parity in agriculture, to identify key areas in which empowerment needs to be strengthened, and to track progress over time.

Typhoon Bopha hits Philippines banana harvest hard

About one quarter of the banana crop in the Philippines, a major food export for that country, has been destroyed by Typhoon Bopha, according to early damage assessments. Furthermore, banana growers fear the storm may have served to spread “Panama Disease,” which has been described by some researchers as “one of the most destructive plant diseases in modern times.”

DHAKA, 31 December 2012 (PlusNews) - Even though HIV prevalence in Bangladesh is as low as 0.1 percent of the 160 million population, experts fear that widespread discrimination towards people who test positive for HIV may leave infections unreported.

“It is possible that due to social stigmatization towards HIV-positive people, people with HIV can go unreported,” said Munir Ahmed, a social mobilization adviser at UNAIDS in Bangladesh.

  1. Philippines - TC Bopha (Pablo) struck the southern Philippines about 4 weeks ago. Nearly 974,000 people remain displaced, of whom almost 14,000 are in 87 evacuation centers. The rest are staying outside of the centers. As of 25 Dec, 1,067 people are reported as dead and another 834 are missing. A large international response is underway, in support of the government. Emergency Shelter remains the highest priority need.

COX'S BAZAR, 27 December 2012 (IRIN) - More than two months after Rohingya refugee Mohammad Shafique fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar, the 32-year-old wonders whether he will be able to return.

Under Burmese law, the Rohingya are de jure stateless and have long faced persecution and discrimination in Myanmar, human rights groups say. Meanwhile, Bangladesh, already home to more than 250,000, mostly undocumented Rohingya refugees, insists it is in no position to accept any more. Shafique told IRIN his story:
