21 September 2017, Rome-- Robust harvests in Latin America and rebounding agricultural conditions in Southern Africa are on course to improve the global food supply situation, but ongoing civil conflicts and climate-related shocks are affecting progress towards hunger reduction, according to the new edition of FAO's Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

Following violent attacks and intimidation, more than 3 200 people have left several villages in the commune of Nassoumbou (province of Soum). They have sought refuge in Djibo, capital of the province, and even further south. Food and non-food items have been distributed by the ICRC to 6 000 people, including IDPs and host families.

Some 16 000 people have been affected by floods. The government entity for emergency response has provided relief assistance to the affected populations.

The Danish government has decided to strengthen its already comprehensive efforts in the West African Sahel-region, in order to address terrorism and irregular migration to Europe. With the collapse of Libya, developments in the Sahel-region affect Europe and Denmark more directly. Today the region is the primary route for migrants from West Africa to Europe. Moreover, the countries in the Sahel are faced with an increasing threat from terrorist groups such as the West African branch of the Al Qaeda.
