WMO report highlights impacts on human safety, well-being and environment

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

More than 10 countries and territories were directly affected as Hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean and later the coastal states in the U.S.. The International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports various levels of damages and needs in Antigua and Barbuda, British, Dutch and French Antilles, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the United States and territories, among others. Beside, Hurricane María affected recently Dominica and Puerto Rico.

(New York 17 September 2017): The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, today allocated US$10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to enable humanitarians to help tens of thousands of people in need of assistance following the devastating category five storm, Hurricane Irma.

Overview

Hurricane IRMA moved across western, north-western counties of Florida and south-western Georgia on 11 September, weakening into a tropical depression. Over the next 48 hours, it is forecast to pass over Alabama and western Tennessee. Heavy rain and strong winds could affect these areas. Media have reported ten deaths across the United States.

It is based on initial reports from social media and public domain sources. Humanity Road activated its disaster desk on Tuesday, September 5th in advance of initial landfall in the Caribbean. Situation Report No 1 was published on September 6, 2017, and Situation Report No 2 was published on September 7.

Desde la semana epidemiológica (SE) 44 de 2016 ningún nuevo país o territorio de las Américas confirmó transmisión autóctona vectorial de Zika; por lo que se mantiene en 48 el número de países y territorios de las Américas que confirmaron casos autóctonos por transmisión vectorial de Zika y en cinco el número de países que notificaron casos de Zika transmitidos sexualmente (Figura 1).
