WMO report highlights impacts on human safety, well-being and environment

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

More than 10 countries and territories were directly affected as Hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean and later the coastal states in the U.S.. The International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports various levels of damages and needs in Antigua and Barbuda, British, Dutch and French Antilles, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the United States and territories, among others. Beside, Hurricane María affected recently Dominica and Puerto Rico.

  • Hurricane MARIA continued moving west-northwest over the Caribbean Sea, strengthening. Its center passed south of St. Croix island (US Virgin islands) early in the morning of 20 September. It then continued moving towards Puerto Rico as a category 5 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 270 km/h.

The foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands met on Monday with representatives from the Caribbean islands affected by hurricane Irma, as well as the UN institutions, to discuss the devastation the storm has caused. The parties decided to work together to do everything possible to provide the people on the islands with emergency aid and assist with reconstruction.

Hurricane MARIA-17 continued moving west-northwest, strengthening. It made landfall over Dominica island on 19 September at 1.15 UTC with maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h (category 5 hurricane).

El huracán María barrió la pequeña isla de Dominica con vientos de fuerza catastrófica durante la noche del lunes, bajó brevemente a categoría 4 pero se volvió a fortalecer en la madrugada del martes, emprendiendo una ruta sobre el Caribe oriental que lo podría llevar directamente sobre Puerto Rico.

El poderoso huracán, con vientos de hasta 257 km por hora, tocó tierra en Dominica hacia la 01h15 GMT del martes, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes de EEUU, citando datos del radar de Martinica y de aviones cazadores de huracanes de la Fuerza Aérea de EEUU.
