Abidjan, 16 November, 2017 - A newly released nutrition report by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa has revealed that undernutrition is still persistent in the region and the number of stunted children has increased. The Africa Nutrition Report, launched today in Abidjan, Ivory Coast also indicates that a growing number of children under five years old are overweight.

We have only one well that provides water to the whole village. During the dry season, each household can carry only a 30-litre basin of water for three days. Sometimes, we have to go right to Savalou, kilometres away to do our laundry and bring back a can of water.”

171 projects in 39 countries – last year, Kolping International was able to support vocational training, agriculture, micro credit, and water projects with over 11 million euro. The donations by private donors increased significantly, amounting to nearly 7.3 million Euro – that’s an increase of over 20% compared with last year.

Nigeria: Le Nigeria connait une flambée de choléra qui s’est aggravée depuis la semaine 33 par l’apparition d’un foyer dans l’Etat de Borno. Au total à la semaine 34 le pays connait 7 foyers dont 3 très actifs (Borno, Kebbi et Kano) qui ont rapporté pendant les deux dernières semaines cumulativement 106 cas dont 05 décès. Ces trois foyers constituent une menace importante pour les autres pays du bassin du Lac Tchad, ainsi que pour le Golf de Guinée via le Benin.

This week’s edition covers key ongoing events in the region, including the grade 3 humanitarian crises in South Sudan and Ethiopia and outbreaks of hepatitis E in the Lake Chad Basin (Chad, Niger and Nigeria), malaria in Burundi, dengue fever in Côte d’Ivoire, and visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya.

An IAEA project shows that significant reserves of good quality water are available in Africa’s drought-prone Sahel region. Pollution is still limited and has not yet become a serious threat to these vital resources. The findings, compiled in five reports published today, are the result of a four-year Agency effort to help 13 countries use isotopic techniques to assess groundwater origin and quality in five shared aquifers and basins, providing the first broad overview of the region’s groundwater supplies.
