We have only one well that provides water to the whole village. During the dry season, each household can carry only a 30-litre basin of water for three days. Sometimes, we have to go right to Savalou, kilometres away to do our laundry and bring back a can of water.”

Accession to International Conventions on Statelessness (Goal. 1.1)

  • Burkina Faso acceded to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness on 3 August 2017, marking an important milestone for the country in its commitment to eradicate statelessness as well as for the region, where 12 of the 15 ECOWAS Member States are now party to both the 1954 and 1961 Conventions.

WMO is to expand its acclaimed Severe Weather Forecasting Demonstration Project to West Africa in a drive to provide reliable forecasts of hazardous weather in support of disaster risk reduction.

Representatives of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) from nine countries in West Africa met in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, from 4 to 8 September to develop a draft implementation plan, thanks to seed funding from Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Members of PREGEC met in Conakry to discuss the progress of this year’s agro-pastoral campaign, the agricultural outlook and the food situation. In preparation for the campaign, governments and their partners made significant strides in helping farmers and pastoralists obtain agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilisers and pesticides) and veterinary materials (vaccines). In addition, food and humanitarian assistance measures have been implemented for vulnerable populations.

Nigeria: Le Nigeria connait une flambée de choléra qui s’est aggravée depuis la semaine 33 par l’apparition d’un foyer dans l’Etat de Borno. Au total à la semaine 34 le pays connait 7 foyers dont 3 très actifs (Borno, Kebbi et Kano) qui ont rapporté pendant les deux dernières semaines cumulativement 106 cas dont 05 décès. Ces trois foyers constituent une menace importante pour les autres pays du bassin du Lac Tchad, ainsi que pour le Golf de Guinée via le Benin.

  • Au mois d’Août 2017, 193 ménages de 655 individus sont retournés en Côte d’Ivoire par les trois points d’entrée à l’Ouest (Guiglo), au Sud-Ouest (Tabou) et au Sud (Abidjan).

  • Avec 78 ménages composés de 311 personnes, Tabou (Sud-Ouest) a enregistré le plus grand nombre de rapatriés pour ce mois d’Août.

Highlights

  • On 2 May, a delegation from Saudi Arabia visited Benin for the donation ceremony of 30 tons of dates to WFP supported school meals programme.

  • A total of 6,424 mt of food commodities are being delivered in Niger through the supply corridor of Benin.

  • Food deliveries for the last quarter of the school year took place. WFP provides school meals to 101,297 children for 21 days instead of 55 during this last trimester.
