DAKAR, 29 October 2014 (IRIN) - Food security and malnutrition rates across the Sahel are deteriorating, due in large part to ongoing conflict and instability in the Central African Republic (CAR), northern Mali, and northeast Nigeria, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Nearly five million more people have joined the ranks of the food insecure since the beginning of the year, bringing the estimated total in need of food aid to 24.7 million - more than double the number in 2013, says OCHA.

DAKAR, 20 February 2014 (IRIN) - A pilot meningitis A immunization campaign targeting more than 155,000 people in Benin with a vaccine that does not require constant refrigeration has demonstrated clear benefits, enabling wider reach, more efficient administration and potential cost reduction, researchers say.

Most vaccines must be kept cold, at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, but the meningitis A vaccine known as MenAfriVac can be stored for up to four days at up to 40 degrees Celsius without any loss of potency, efficacy or safety.

DAKAR/KANO, 27 May 2013 (IRIN) - Northern Nigeria's grain trade, which supplies almost half of the Sahel's cereals, has slowed severely, while abnormally high prices of staple grains across the Sahel are causing serious food security concerns in this chronically vulnerable region.

The areas most at risk are southeastern and central Niger, which are highly dependent on Nigerian grain flows, as well as northern Nigeria and northern Benin. Chad is somewhat protected from the dynamic, as it produced a healthy harvest in 2012, says FEWS NET.
