4 March 2017 – The United Nations Security Council is today in Chad, as part of a four-country visit “to shine a spotlight” on the ongoing humanitarian challenges in the Lake Chad Basin region and draw international attention to the plight of about 11 million people.

In the Chadian capital of N'Djamena, the Council met with Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacké and visited the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which includes troops from the four affected regional countries – Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, plus Benin – in the fight against Boko Haram.

Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) as part of strategic cooperation with Islamic Development Bank has jointly carried out humanitarian actions in Benin and Chad. The new actions took place under the "Alliance to Fight Avoidable Blindness" campaign, AzerTag state news agency reported.

A total of 11,640 persons with problems in their eyesight have benefitted from free eye examinations out of which 506 persons in Benin and 835 persons in Chad have undergone surgeries and had their sights restored.

DAKAR, 20 December 2012 (IRIN) - Despite good rains across much of the Sahel this year, 1.4 million children are expected to be malnourished - up from one million in 2012, according to the 2013 Sahel regional strategy.

The strategy, which calls on donors to provide US$1.6 billion of aid for 2013, says fewer people are expected to go hungry in 2013 - 10.3 million instead of 18.7 million in 2012.

9 December 2011 – Three more countries in the so-called “meningitis belt” stretching across Africa will this month introduce a new vaccine designed to eliminate a particular strain of the often deadly disease, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) reported today.

Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad will vaccinate millions of their citizens with MenAfriVac, which was created to target Group A meningitis, responsible for millions of cases in sub-Saharan Africa over the past century.

Improvement in market grain supplies with the return of the rains

• On the whole, the rainy season is continuing to settle in normally all across the region. Reported delays in the start‐of‐season in Sudanian areas of the eastern basin (Nigeria, Chad, and Benin) are being made up.  

• In general, there has been some improvement in food access, even in Chad. Prices, though still slightly elevated, are falling back in line with normal seasonal trends.
