What is the quickest way to find out exactly what people need? Ask them. Sounds easy enough. But in an emergency setting, collecting this kind of information can prove logistically challenging. And slow. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been no exception in terms of logistical challenges, but it has nevertheless proven to be an opportunity for the Red Cross to pioneer an efficient method of data collection—Rapid Mobile Phone Based surveys or RAMP.

A call for national and regional containment, recovery and prevention

West African nations that experienced low or zero incidence of Ebola have already been affected by the Ebola crisis because of their deep connections with the three most affected countries.

“The consequences of Ebola are vast,” said Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, the Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa. “Stigma and risk aversion have caused considerable amounts of damage, shutting down borders and indirectly affecting the economies of a large number of countries in the sub-region”.

The worst outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in history continues to ravage communities in West Africa. UNICEF estimates that 9.8 million children and young people under the age of 20 live in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia; countries where disease transmission is widespread and intense. Of these, 2.9 million are under the age of 5. UNICEF estimates that up to 10,000 children have lost one or both parents or caregivers due to Ebola.

  • Reported case incidence continues to fluctuate in Guinea, with no identifiable downward trend. Ebola virus disease (EVD) continues to spread geographically within the country, with the prefecture of Fria reporting 2 confirmed cases for the first time. Case incidence has declined to low levels in Liberia. There are signs that incidence has levelled off in Sierra Leone, although transmission remains intense in the west of the country.

An estimated 3,492 children have been infected with Ebola, and a far greater number of children have lost one or both parents or caregivers in this crisis.
