Abidjan, 16 November, 2017 - A newly released nutrition report by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa has revealed that undernutrition is still persistent in the region and the number of stunted children has increased. Rainfall deficits in September in Mauritania and Senegal may affect crops
The seasonal rainfall has been globally average to above average (Figure 1 and Figure 2) over most of the region, but September rainfall has been below average over most of the Sahelian zone with pockets of severe deficits in areas of Senegal, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.
The Algerian authorities have launched a discriminatory crackdown against foreign nationals, rounding up and forcibly expelling more than 2,000 sub-Saharan African migrants from a range of countries to neighbouring Niger and Mali over the past three weeks, said Amnesty International. Those expelled include more than 300 minors, among them at least 25 unaccompanied children.

Poorly-distributed rainfall during August and early September has delayed crop development over parts of southern Burkina Faso and northern Ghana. Below-average rain is forecast next week, which further reduces the chance for recovery.
