We have only one well that provides water to the whole village. During the dry season, each household can carry only a 30-litre basin of water for three days. Sometimes, we have to go right to Savalou, kilometres away to do our laundry and bring back a can of water.”

Angèle Zodjilou, a mother of five, recounts the ordeals of women in Tatonougo village, in the central hills region of Benin.

Nigeria: Le Nigeria connait une flambée de choléra qui s’est aggravée depuis la semaine 33 par l’apparition d’un foyer dans l’Etat de Borno. Au total à la semaine 34 le pays connait 7 foyers dont 3 très actifs (Borno, Kebbi et Kano) qui ont rapporté pendant les deux dernières semaines cumulativement 106 cas dont 05 décès. Ces trois foyers constituent une menace importante pour les autres pays du bassin du Lac Tchad, ainsi que pour le Golf de Guinée via le Benin.

This week’s edition covers key ongoing events in the region, including the grade 3 humanitarian crises in South Sudan and Ethiopia and outbreaks of hepatitis E in the Lake Chad Basin (Chad, Niger and Nigeria), malaria in Burundi, dengue fever in Côte d’Ivoire, and visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya.

Ghana : En S18, 2 cas de choléra ont été confirmés en provenance de Cape Coast. Les 2 cas ont été confirmés par à la fois TDR et culture. Au total 31 autres cas ont présenté des symptômes similaires suite à un achalandage de nourritures au campus universitaire de Cape Coast. Tous ces cas ont cependant été testés négatifs TDR et culture, et leurs contacts n’ont pas développé de diarrhée. Au total 33 cas ont développé des symptômes abdominaux suite à une exposition à cet achalandage.

The PMI Strategy for 2015–2020 takes into account the progress over the past decade and the new challenges that have arisen, setting forth a vision, goal, objectives, and strategic approach for PMI through 2020, while reaffirming the longer-term goal of a world without malaria. Malaria prevention and control remains a major U.S. foreign assistance objective, and this strategy fully aligns with the U.S. Government’s vision of ending preventable child and maternal deaths and ending extreme poverty.
