The current rainy season across West Africa has affected hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in almost every country in the region. The worst flood-affected country is Benin where 43 people have been killed and over 150,000 people's homes have been damaged or lost due to the floods. Farm land and schools have also been badly damaged by the floods.

CHF 183,673 (USD 191,773 or EUR 137,332) has been allocated from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)'s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to 10,000 beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary: Continuous rainfall in Benin and the overflow of the Niger River have caused heavy flooding in many parts of the country since July 2010.

14 octobre 2010 - Une équipe de l'ONU pour l'évaluation et la coordination en cas de catastrophe (UNDAC) est arrivée au Bénin, le pays le plus durement touché par des inondations qui frappent l'Afrique centrale et de l'ouest depuis plusieurs jours et ont déjà fait plus de 377 morts et 1,5 million de déplacés.

Les premiers membres de l'équipe composée de cinq spécialistes des réponses d'urgence sont arrivés mercredi à Cotonou, la capitale du Bénin, où 360.000 personnes ont été affectées par les pluies torrentielles et les crues de plusieurs rivières.

The human toll from the unusually high precipitation is high; at least 40 people have died, 360,000 refugees and 100,000 homeless, while 3.4 million have been affected in some way - out of a total population of eight million.

During September 2010, Benin received twice the average amount of rain expected and the floodwaters have affected 45 per cent of communes in the African country.

The flood waters resulting from overflowing river levels have not receded, as predicted by experts, but have actually worsened. Approximately 46,000 homes have been destroyed by relentless rainfall.

More than 200,000 people are homeless or displaced, and 296 people have been injured. Schools and other public buildings are temporarily being used as shelter.

Caritas is appealing for US1.8 million (1.3 million euro) following heavy flooding in the West African country of Benin. Over 350,000 people have been affected by the floods and dozens have died.

The impact of the floods is massive: 130,000 hectares of crops have been ruined; 55,000 houses and over 270 schools have been damaged, as well as many roads and bridges.

"It's a dramatic situation. There are people who have lost everything and need a lot of help. We're very worried about the future and the risk of food shortages because of the damaged crops.

Geneva, Switzerland (Oct. 12, 2010) - CARE has launched an emergency response to help families suffering through the devastating flooding that has affected nearly half the communes of Benin. According to the government, 700,000 people have been affected, including more than 200,000 people whose homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Crops, food supplies and livestock have been washed away by the floods, leaving 200,000 people in need of food assistance to survive until the next harvest in April, 2011.

12 October 2010 - Nearly 1.5 million people have been affected by floods and 377 killed in Western and Central Africa, with Chad, Northern Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria facing a serious cholera epidemic, United Nations relief officials reported today.
