This is the first edition of the Global Slavery Index. The Index estimates the number of people in modern slavery in 162 countries. The Index identified factors relevant to risk of slavery and provides a standardised measure of these factors that allows comparison country by country. The Index examines the strength of government responses for the 20 countries at the top and bottom of the Index ranking.

  • Despite the 2013 harvest in the Sahel being equivalent to the last five years average, preliminary figures indicate that at least 13 million people (excluding Nigeria) are still food insecure, due to limited access to food. The agricultural production of the poorest households is insufficient to restore their livelihoods and is expected to cover only their nutritional needs for the next two to three months. Thereafter they will depend entirely on markets.

Summary: CHF 193’944 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 20 September 2013 to support the Benin Red Cross National Society in delivering assistance to some 7’000 beneficiaries for 3 months.

The floods disaster that occurred in September displaced about 10,000 persons in the municipalities of Malanville and Karimama.The Benin Red Cross targeted its assistance to the most affected population in the affected villages and temporary camp sites.

  • In West Africa, market supplies improved throughout the region in October due to average ongoing harvests. Carryover stocks were average to above-average in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Benin but below-average in many areas of the Niger and Nigeria due to the effects flood and conflict that disrupted the marketing system in 2012 and early 2013. Stable rice imports from international markets contributed to food availability in Senegal and Mauritania (Pages 3-5).

CHF 201,952 was initially allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Croix-Rouge Beninoise in delivering immediate assistance to approximately 20,000 people (4,000 households).

This update extends support to the existing operation through a second DREF allocation of CHF 39,203 to support an additional 25,000 beneficiaries (approximately 5,000 households) in Cotonou municipality.

5 November 2013, Cotonou/Rome – FAO is supporting farming families in northern Benin who lost crops, livestock and fishing grounds when the Niger River overran its banks in August, just as many villagers were only barely getting back on their feet from the last floods in 2012.

  • 24,519 cholera cases and 484 deaths have been reported in 17 countries in West and Central Africa in 2013 -- 64 per cent less than last year.

  • The most affected countries by number are DRC, the Republic of Congo, and Guinea Bissau.

  • The peak months of cholera occurred between mid-March to mid-April; the lowest period of reported cases was from mid-June to mid-July.

  • There has been a 100 per cent increase in the number of reported cholera cases in Nigeria in October as compared to September.
