The 2010 Humanitarian Appeal addresses twelve major humanitarian crises around the world. It presents a strategic, concerted action plan for each crisis, bringing together hundreds of aid organizations working together to deliver vital aid effectively and efficiently. It requires donors also to act together to ensure that these joint efforts receive the urgent funding needed to save lives, prevent irrecoverable harm, maintain dignity and restore self-reliance.
This bulletin provides information on price changes for the most commonly consumed staples and the potential impacts of these changes on the cost of the food basket. Staples contribute 40 - 80% of energy intake for the most vulnerable population groups in developing countries. Therefore, even a small increase in staple food prices has a high impact on overall food consumption, especially when the food basket is composed of very few staples.

Programme purpose: As outlined in the 2009-2010 plan, the West and Central Africa Zone's (WCAZ) immediate focus is to support National Societies in providing assistance to address the needs of vulnerable people. In disaster management WCAZ faces challenges due to new disaster patterns related to climate variability.
Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.

Programme purpose: To increase the capacity of the International Federation to assist National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters through the provision of timely and adequate financial support for disaster response from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF).
During the first six months of the year, the DREF allocated a total of CHF 7,484,779 in 49 different allocations to 32 Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies.

The pandemic A (H1N1) has reached a new stage in our Region with the first two deaths reported in South Africa and Mauritius. As of 10th of August 2009 a total of 1,464 cases were reported in 16 African countries. The regional conference organized by the WHO AFRO is taking place in South Africa (11-13 August 2009) to update delegates on the epidemiology of the current pandemic, the processes of national preparedness and response to A (H1N1), develop regional strategies for resource mobilization as well as share experiences among countries.
