Dec 1 (Reuters) - Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, almost 60 million people have been infected with HIV and 25 million people have died of HIV-related causes.

As World Aids Day is marked on Tuesday, globally some 33.4 million people were living with HIV.

Pandemic H1N1: The pandemic is flaring up in our Region. Fourteen (14) countries are now affected with a total of 589 confirmed cases without death reported as of 31st of July 2009. The Regional Office for Africa is organizing an African Conference on Pandemic A (H1N1) in South Africa 11-13 August 2009 to reflect mainly on the impacts of the pandemic.

Pandemic H1N1: The pandemic is still spreading in our Region. The number of countries affected has not changed but as of 24th of July 2009, a total of 185 confirmed cases without death were reported from 12 countries. AFRO maintains its call to the member states to intensify surveillance. Floods: We continue to monitor the floods in West Africa countries as the rainy season continues.

Pandémie H1N1: la pandémie continue de se propager dans notre Région. Le nombre de pays touchés est resté identique mais au 24 juillet 2009, un total de 185 cas sans décès avait été notifié dans 12 pays. AFRO maintient son appel aux états membres pour qu'ils intensifient la surveillance. Inondations: Nous avons commencé le suivi des inondations dans les pays de l'Afrique de l'Ouest car la saison des pluies continue. D'autres épidémies notamment de méningite dans la ceinture méningitique continuent.

Pandemic H1N1: WHO is very concerned by the rapid spread of the pandemic which has now claimed more than 700 lives worldwide. In our Region, no death has been reported so far but the number of confirmed cases and countries affected is rapidly increasing. As of 21st of July 2009, a total of 174 confirmed cases were reported from 12 countries. AFRO maintains its call to the member states to intensify surveillance.

Floods: We continue to monitor the floods in West Africa countries as we enter the rainy season.

Pandémie H1N1: L'OMS est très préoccupée par la propagation rapide de la pandémie qui a fait à ce jour plus de 700 morts dans le monde. Aucun décès n'a encore été noté dans notre Région mais le nombre des cas confirmés et des pays touchés augmente rapidement. Au 21 juillet 2009, un total de 174 cas confirmés avaient été notifiés dans 12 pays. AFRO maintient son appel aux états membres pour qu'ils intensifient la surveillance. Inondations: nous continuons de suivre les inondations dans les pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest en ce début de saison des pluies.

Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency and malaria are both highly prevalent health problems in Africa. Vitamin A deficiency affects over 30 million children, most of whom are in the age-group (under five years) most affected by malaria. Vitamin A deficiency increases all-cause mortality in this part of the population, and malaria is an important cause of death in children at this age.
