↗ International prices of wheat and maize rose in March for the third consecutive month and averaged more than 10 percent above their levels in December 2017. Prices were mainly supported by concerns over the impact of prolonged dryness in key-growing areas of the United States of America and Argentina, coupled with strong demand. International rice prices remained relatively stable.

Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) as part of strategic cooperation with Islamic Development Bank has jointly carried out humanitarian actions in Benin and Chad. The new actions took place under the "Alliance to Fight Avoidable Blindness" campaign, AzerTag state news agency reported.
A total of 11,640 persons with problems in their eyesight have benefitted from free eye examinations out of which 506 persons in Benin and 835 persons in Chad have undergone surgeries and had their sights restored.
One target of the Millennium Development Goals is to halve the proportion of the population without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. The world met the water goal five years ahead of schedule, but access to sanitation still lags, hurting both human health and economies. In World Bank client countries, access to improved water sources increased from 73 percent in 1990 to to 86.4 percent in 2010, and access to improved sanitation from 42 percent to 56.3 percent.
- The FAO Food Price Index continued to rise in November.
- International prices of wheat and rice increased significantly in November and early December. Prices of maize remained firm.
- In Asia, prices of rice further strengthened in the past month while prices of wheat remained high.
- In Africa, prices of cereals are declining or stable and at low levels in all sub-regions.
- In Central America, prices of beans are at record levels.
This bulletin provides information on price changes for the most commonly consumed staples and the potential impacts of these changes on the cost of the food basket. Staples contribute 40 - 80% of energy intake for the most vulnerable population groups in developing countries. Therefore, even a small increase in staple food prices has a high impact on overall food consumption, especially when the food basket is composed of very few staples.

- World cereal production in 2008 is forecast to increase 2.6 percent to a record 2 164 million tonnes.
