A. Situation analysis

Description of the disaster

Sporadic inter-communal violence in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and attacks by armed groups in North Kivu in December 2017 resulted in mass internal displacement and population movement of thousands of Congolese refugees into neighbouring countries, including Burundi.

Le traitement dans l’urgence du choléra au niveau de la communauté, ou des maladies diarrhéiques aigues ou sévères, reste une préoccupation pour la Croix-Rouge Burundi et le Ministère de la Santé. Pour contribuer à la réponse communautaire, la Croix-Rouge du Burundi en partenariat avec la Croix-Rouge Norvégienne a organisé du 12 au 17 février 2018, une formation à l’endroit des volontaires de la Croix-Rouge, des techniciens de promotion de la santé ainsi que des coordinateurs provinciaux de la santé issus du Ministère de la Santé publique et de la lutte contre le SIDA.

The Burundi Red Cross, in its Strategic Plan 2018-2021, focuses on the strengthening of disaster risk reduction community committees. In order to raise awareness to the importance of the aforementioned committees, an interactive radio show was held this Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Radio Culture. The topic was "Disaster Preparedness and Prevention for a Resilient Community." Jean Baptiste Niyungeko, coordinator of Emergency operations at the Burundi Red Cross, said the improvement of the well-being of the community must results in its own vision and capacity.

Political, security and related humanitarian conditions in Burundi aren’t expected to improve and will lead to a continued outflow of Burundian refugees in 2018. As the phenomenon is becoming protracted, promoting access to agricultural livelihoods is key to achieve refugees’ self-reliance.

The DTM dashboard for the month of January 2018 covers all 18 provinces of Burundi and identifies 175,936 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 39,174 households. 82% if the identified population are women and youth under 18 years. Natural disasters are the main displacement reason (70%).
