What is FFA?

The most food-insecure people often live in fragile and degraded landscapes and areas prone to recurrent natural shocks and other risks.

Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) is one of the WFP’s flagship initiatives aimed at addressing most food-insecure people’s immediate food needs with cash, voucher or food transfers and improving their long-term food security and resilience.

Contexte

De janvier à mai 2018, il est estimé que près de 80 000 burundais ont été affectés à un certain degré par de violentes pluies torrentielles. Les dégâts sont : a) la destruction totale ou partielle des habitations avec des maisons encore inondées à ce jour, b) d’infrastructures sociales telles que les salles de classe, c) de dingues et d) de champs. Le niveau de besoin varie selon la sévérité de l’impact des pluies par zones et du niveau de vulnérabilité des populations affectées. Des efforts sont en cours pour identifier ces besoins.

Prior to the current influx of Burundian refugees, Tanzania had only one remaining refugee camp i.e Nyarugusu, established in 1996 to host Congolese (DRC) refugees. Accommodating just over 65,000 mainly Congolese refugees, and being the only refugee camp open, Nyarugusu provided shelter to thousands of Burundian refugees who arrived in Tanzania fleeing from civil and political strife in Burundi at the start of the emergency in April 2015, increasing the camp population to over three times its carrying capacity and making it one of the largest and most overcrowded camps in the world.

SITUATION

• Economic challenges and poor rainfall undermine food security in Zimbabwe. Nationally, 92 percent of households in Zimbabwe practice agriculture as their primary livelihood, according to the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC). After multiple years of drought-reduced harvests, increased planting and good rains increased agricultural production in the first half of 2017, reducing the stress on many households and providing some households with sufficient food stocks to sustain themselves during the current poor agricultural season.

During the first three months of 2018, almost 9,700 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement1 to 13 countries in Europe.2 This is similar to the first quarter of 2017 and already almost twothirds of the average rate of 15,400 submissions per year during the previous 10 years.

La police Nationale (Région sud), en collaboration avec la Branche Croix-Rouge de Rumonge a organisé des exercices de simulation en rapport avec la gestion des crises et des catastrophes. Le but ultime de l'exercice est d'apprendre comment protéger la population avec usage de force modérée lors des interventions. Quatre cent trente sept policiers de la région des provinces Bururi, Rutana, Makamba et Rumonge et quatorze brigadiers d’urgence de la Branche de Rumonge ont participé à ces exercices de simulation qui ont eu lieu depuis lundi le 21 Mai 2018.
