GENEVA - Today there are four million refugees living in more than 230 refugee camps worldwide without access to adequate lighting. This means that once night falls almost all activity ends. The effects of this are stark.

Key messages

Education is lifesaving. Education is crucial for both the protection and healthy development of girls and boys affected by crises. It can rebuild their lives; restore their sense of normality and safety, and provide them with important life skills. It helps children to be self-sufficient, to be heard, and to have more influence on issues that affect them. It is also one of the best tools to invest in their long-term future, and in the peace, stability and economic growth of their countries.

As delivered

This crisis rarely reaches the international headlines so I am grateful for the opportunity to brief you on the growing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. My main message today is that we can no longer deal with this crisis on a business-as-usual basis. The scale and scope of the humanitarian crisis has far surpassed what we estimated or planned for this year.

2-Year Bloody Crackdown on Political Opposition

08 Nov 2017 description

Over the past year the situation in Burundi, following the election-related crisis in 2015, has been shifted to the backburner by the Peace and Security Council (PSC). In October, Burundi had been included on the agenda of the PSC while it was chaired, paradoxically, by Burundi. The meeting never took place. Meanwhile, the situation in the country has become a bone of contention between African Union (AU) member states and non-African states in both Brussels and Geneva.
