BUBANZA/CANKUZO/BUJUMBURA/BURURI/MAKAMBA/GITEGA,19 fév 2018 : L’opération d’inscription au rôle d’électeur pour le referendum constitutionnel de mai prochain et les élections générales de 2020 a pris fin samedi le 17 févier 2018 dans toutes les provinces du pays. Dans la plupart de provinces les chiffres montrent l’engouement que la population a réservé à cette activité.

To ensure this, IOM, the UN Migration Agency has rolled out a mobile app called MigApp to empower migrants in East and Horn of Africa.

Even in the age of online media, radio has remained the medium that reaches the widest audience in Africa. This makes radio a critical tool for our work at the Red Cross and Red Crescent. It links us with the rural and remote families we serve by hosting open discussions, getting feedback and sharing life-saving information during disasters and humanitarian crises. Most importantly, radio assists us in bringing communities together and, using their diverse voices to enable them to define their own solutions together.

The Burundi Red Cross, in its Strategic Plan 2018-2021, focuses on the strengthening of disaster risk reduction community committees. In order to raise awareness to the importance of the aforementioned committees, an interactive radio show was held this Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Radio Culture. The topic was "Disaster Preparedness and Prevention for a Resilient Community." Jean Baptiste Niyungeko, coordinator of Emergency operations at the Burundi Red Cross, said the improvement of the well-being of the community must results in its own vision and capacity.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the steps taken by the Ugandan government to investigate allegations of wrongdoing in government refugee programmes.

Uganda’s Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, initiated the probe after reports received by UNHCR and the World Food Programme alleged corruption and grave misconduct by officials involved in refugee assistance.

The allegations include faking documents on delivery of food assistance as well as demanding refugees pay bribes to access various services that should be free of cost.

Uganda currently hosts almost 1.4 million refugees, with more than 1 million who fled South Sudan. Beyond this massive displacement into northern Uganda, many settlements in the southwestern part of the country are also seeing steady influxes of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, and elsewhere. While the refugee response faced a 348.7 million USD budget shortfall in 2017, humanitarian actors need to have a better understanding of needs and gaps across Uganda, in order to prioritize the limited funding available.
