DAR ES SALAAM, 11 November (IRIN) - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, was in Tanzania from the 8 to 10 November to discuss the refugee situation with the Tanzanian authorities. Following meetings with government officials, he spoke to IRIN in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

From life in a refugee camp in Tanzania to life in Canada, it is still the life of someone who cannot go home. Roger Nzohabonimana wrote the following piece after he left the refugee camps of Tanzania. It is plain to read in his first person narrative that, while resettlement in Canada has improved his life enormously, his ultimate wish would be to return in safety and dignity to a Burundi at peace. We wish this for a whole new generation of Burundians who have grown up in exile.

Refugees International is sending an assessment mission to Tanzania and Kenya. The mission will focus on conditions in camps for Burundian and Congolese refugees in Tanzania and for Somali Bantu and Sudanese refugees in Kenya. Advocate Anne Edgerton and Assistant Director of Development Antonia Blackwood are being joined on the Tanzania portion of the mission by two members of RI's Board of Directors, Trish Malloch Brown and Eileen Shields-West.
