Being informed in a timely and accessible manner remains vital if migrants are to make the right or informed decisions. To ensure this, IOM, the UN Migration Agency has rolled out a mobile app called MigApp to empower migrants in East and Horn of Africa.

Political, security and related humanitarian conditions in Burundi aren’t expected to improve and will lead to a continued outflow of Burundian refugees in 2018. As the phenomenon is becoming protracted, promoting access to agricultural livelihoods is key to achieve refugees’ self-reliance.

January rainfall improves harvest prospects in Burundi and Rwanda

KEY MESSAGES

  • Tanzania continued to receive well above-average rainfall in January, resulting in favorable agricultural conditions across the country.

  • Burundi, eastern Rwanda, and localized areas of eastern DRC also received above-average rains during this period, improving harvest prospects following dry spells during the Season A (October to December) rains.

On 31 August 2017 at the Tripartite Commission Meeting for the Voluntary Repatriation of Burundian Refugees in Tanzania, the United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Burundi, and UNHCR issued a joint communiqué and agreed to implement a work plan from 7 September to 31 December 2017, which entailed the voluntary repatriation of approximately 12,000 Burundian refugees who had by then registered their desire to return to Burundi.

END OF YEAR SITREP: January – December 2017

2,561 severe acute malnourished (SAM) refugee children were admitted into SAM treatment programs with a cure rate of 85.4 per cent.

  • UNICEF supported WASH (handwashing, latrines and water points) in all camps covering 91,323 children both in schools and child friendly spaces.
    With support from UNICEF, 34,468 refugee children under five were vaccinated against measles and 194,236 people with malaria were treated.
