SITUATION OVERVIEW

Beginning on September 8, 2017, Hurricane Irma tore through the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation. As communities were assessing the damage and just starting the rebuilding process, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 5 hurricane, dealing a crippling blow to island nations. Both hurricanes Irma and Maria registered as some of the most powerful hurricanes in recorded history, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.

This week in New York I expressed Australia’s condolences to Caribbean Foreign Ministers for the loss of life and destruction caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all people affected by the devastation.

The storms’ deadly and destructive impact has been felt in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St Martin and the Turks and Caicos.

La Embajadora de Colombia en Cuba, Araceli Morales, informó que “se entregó a la Cancillería cubana, a través de la agencia Emed (Empresa Ejecutora de Donativos)” las 15 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria enviadas por Colombia para los damnificados por el huracán Irma, “ellos canalizan las donaciones y las entregan a las zonas más afectadas de Cuba”.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • On the forecast track of Hurricane Maria, currently a category 4 Hurricane, the center of the storm will move across the Leeward Islands late today and tonight, bringing heavy rain and wind to islands that were already impacted by Hurricane Irma.

  • In Anguilla, the Ann-Victoria Smith Polyclinic (Welches Polyclinic) is operational and will absorb patients of the Valley Health Center and Dental Unit which has closed due to major damage.

Irma, que descendió a categoría 4 la madrugada del viernes, mantuvo vientos de 297 kilómetros por hora por 37 horas, un tiempo nunca antes registrado por ningún otro ciclón en esta zona.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Aug 7 2017 (IPS) - Since 2013, Jamaica’s Met Office has been using its Climate Predictability Tool (CPT) to forecast ‘below average’ rainfall or drought across the island. The tool has allowed this northern Caribbean island to accurately predict several dry periods and droughts, including its most destructive episode in 2014 when an estimated one billion dollars in agricultural losses were incurred due to crop failures and wild fires caused by the exceptionally dry conditions.
