Tectonic Plates and Fault Lines

The region is home to extremes in elevation and the world's most active seismic and volcanic activity. Southwest of India, the Maldives has a maximum height of just 230cm, while far to the north, the Tibetan Plateau averages over 4,500m across its 2.5 million square kilometres and is home to all 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 metres. The Himalaya were born 70 million years ago when the Arabian Plate collided with the Eurasian plate.

Volcanic Explosivity in Asia-Pacific

This map shows the density of volcanic eruptions based on the explosivity index for each eruption and the time period of the eruption. Eruption information is spread to 100km beyond point source to indicate areas that could be affected by volcanic emissions or ground shaking.

El 29 de septiembre, una serie de tsunamis provocados por un terremoto submarino (de magnitud 8,0) azotaron las Islas Samoa. (Fuente: informe de situación de OCHA # 4).

Samoa: 129 muertes fueron confirmadas con una estimación de más de 1000 heridos. La OMS está prestando asistencia técnica al Ministerio de Salud y el Equipo de Manejo de Desastres de las Naciones Unidas ha enviado un experto para ayudar en la coordinación del apoyo internacional.

SAMOAN ISLANDS

On 29 September, a series of tsunamis triggered by an undersea earthquake (magnitude 8.0) hit the Samoan Islands. (Source: OCHA situation report #4)

Samoa: 129 deaths were confirmed and the estimative is more than 1000 injured. WHO is providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Disaster Management Team has sent an expert to assist in the coordination of international support.
