Executive Summary

The second 2017 meeting of the Regional Immunization Technical Advisory Group (RITAG), the principal advisory group to the WHO Regional Offce for Africa took place at the Protea Balalaika Hotel Sandton, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 5–7 December 2017. The meeting focused on progress towards regional immunization goals, maternal & neonatal tetanus elimination, polio eradication & end-game strategy, challenges facing middle-income countries, cholera control and immunization research in the African Region.

OVERVIEW

In 2016, 77,000 people in Southern Angola were in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) and 272,500 people in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), translating to 37% and 21% of the assessed area’s population respectively (and totalling 58%). Lack of potable water contributed to the situation. At the national level, in 2016 about 38% of population suffered from chronic malnutrition. In south-central Bie Province, this figure surpassed 50%. The country is experiencing financial difficulties and lack of funding is a major constraint in expanding VAA to the whole country.

The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the world’s most complex and challenging yet forgotten crises. As of 31 July 2018, 782,363 Congolese refugees are being hosted in African countries.

From 1 January to 31 July 2018 alone, some 121,618 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in refugee flows to Uganda, Burundi and Zambia.

Situation Overview

The Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, WHO and partners are responding to an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak since 1 August 2018, with the epicentre being Mangina town in Mabalako Health Zone, North Kivu Province, in the east of the country. Confirmed cases have also been reported from Beni Health Zone (North Kivu Province) and Mandima Health Zone (Ituri Province).

Introduction

Water is vital for the life of refugees and is used for human consumption, hygiene for clothes washing, showers and for agriculture. Water provision is part of the group of Basic Needs and Essential Services that is implemented by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and is included into the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) cluster of the Comprehensive Refugees Response Framework (CRRF). As such, water is always prioritised at the onset of the emergency phase of any humanitarian response as well as during the search for durable solutions.

The outbreak of violence in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a result of elections scheduled for December 2018, triggered the internal displacement of some 1.4 million people and the flight of over 35,000 refugees into Lunda Norte Province, Angola.

The Government of Angola (GoA) has maintained an open door policy since March 2017, and welcomed Congolese nationals fleeing as a result of conflict in DRC.

Luena - The Environment Minister, Paula Francisco Coelho, on Thursday in Luena (Moxico), recommended the creation of a legal instrument that aims to detect, identify, and monitor areas of risk in order to eliminate the emergence of ravines.

The official made the recommendation at the opening of the workshop on ravines in Angola, arguing that the spread of gullies not only affects the communities but also conditions the country's sustainable development and the ecosystem conservation.

Highlights

  • 890 suspected cases of cholera, including 15 deaths, were reported from January to June in Uige, Cabinda and Luanda Provinces.

  • Throughout the year, 1,250 mobilizers were trained on cholera prevention in Uige and Luanda’s cholera affected communities through door-to-door visits, reaching over 185,000 people.
