Luanda - The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF reiterated their support to the Angolan Government on Friday (18), in order to develop a robust surveillance and monitoring vaccination system to prevent, detect and respond quickly to any case of polio.

According to WHO representative in Angola Fernanda Alves, the organization and strategic polio partners, including the UN agencies, have been supporting the Angolan Government in actions and strategies to control and block poliovirus transmission by providing human and financial resources.

  • Preparations for World Polio Day taking place next week on 24 October are in full swing. On that day, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) is expected to declare poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) as globally eradicated. The event will be broadcast on the internet.

Violence, conflict and hunger continue to drive displacement in the Great Lakes region. In May and June, more than 360,000 people were uprooted in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bringing the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) country-wide to 4.8 million. Meanwhile, refugees from the broader region have continued to flee to Uganda, with more than 78,000 new arrivals from the DRC (nearly 47,100), South Sudan (more than 27,100), and Burundi (over 4,500) in 2019.

The multiple deprivations affecting vulnerable populations are the greatest hurdle to achieving zero hunger. By directly addressing structural barriers, social protection can help WFP achieve its mandate on nutrition and food insecurity, and reach the most vulnerable, including people living with, at risk of1 and affected by HIV. Reaching zero hunger requires integrated programming aimed at all vulnerable population groups to enable them to access the support systems and services they need to be drawn out of poverty.

Vers la mi-août 2019, des milliers de réfugiés congolais ayant fui le conflit dit « Kamuina Nsapu » vers l’Angola ont exprimé subitement leur volonté de rentrer en RDC, ce qui a pris la communauté humanitaire de court. De plus, alors qu’une grande partie de ces réfugiés est originaire de la province du Kasaï, la quasi-totalité a exprimé le désir de se rendre à Kananga, au Kasaï Central, lors de ce retour. Ceci semble s’expliquer par plusieurs raisons :

WASHINGTON, 2 octobre 2019 — Le Groupe de la Banque mondiale a approuvé cette semaine deux financements de l’Association internationale de développement (IDA)* et de la Banque internationale pour la reconstruction et le développement (BIRD), à hauteur de respectivement 220 et 60 millions de dollars, pour renforcer les systèmes de santé et assurer l'efficacité de la veille sanitaire en Afrique centrale. Il s’agit du quatrième projet financé au titre du Programme de renforcement des systèmes régionaux de surveillance des maladies (ou REDISSE, selon son acronyme en anglais).

  • On 24 October 2019, World Polio Day, an event will be held at the WHO to mark the potential certification of eradication of wild poliovirus type 3. With no poliovirus type 3 detected anywhere in the world since 2012, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) is anticipated to officially declare this strain as globally eradicated. The event will also be broadcast on the internet.

Luanda, October 9, 2019 - The Angolan Ministry of Health, with technical support from WHO, carried out a data review and validation of five key Neglected Tropical Diseases. namely lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis (Onco), schistosomiasis (SCH), geohelminthiasis or soil-borne helminths (HTS) and trachoma

The process will allow the country to identify the magnitude of neglected diseases, monitor ongoing prevention and control efforts, and determine the actions needed to achieve the control and elimination of NTDs in the country.

The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 2463 (2019), in which the Council requested me to report to it every six months on the implementation of the commitments under the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Region. It provides an overview of peace and security developments in the Great Lakes region since the issuance of my previous report (S/2019/229) and covers the period from 1 March to 31 August 2019.
