Almost half of the countries in Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESAR) have been affected by cholera outbreaks since the beginning of 2019. More than 8,258 cholera / AWD cases including 29 deaths have been reported in 10 countries in the region, with an average Case Fatality Rate of 0.4%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mozambique accounts for 69.5% (5,656) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Kenya at 16.3% (1,350).
■ As of 15 March 2,060 South Sudanese refugees had been relocated to Biringi settlement since February. Most of them had arrived during an influx in the first half of February, while some had also stayed along the border for years and complied with the authorities’ request to move further inland.
■ Due to strong wind, on 9-10 March, 222 refugee shelters were destroyed at Mole camp, Sud Ubangi Province, home to almost 15,000 Central African refugees. There is a need to rehabilitate these structures to avoid promiscuity in the camp.

Beira - Angolan humanitarian aid mission in Mozambique has announced it started with the rehabilitation works of Dondo health center damaged by the cyclone Idai that hit that country on March 14.
The works are set to last fifteen days and consist of recovery of the roof, wall painting and refitting the health facility to meet the patients needs.
Approximately 3,385 cholera / AWD cases including 19 deaths have been reported in 10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR); with an average Case Fatality Rate of 0.6%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Kenya accounts for 35.4 % (1,198) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Mozambique at 31% (1,048).
The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently implementing the WHO/AFRO II larviciding demonstration project in six districts in Omusati, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Kavango East and West regions where malaria is transmitted. The project aims to strengthen national capacity for implementing diversified mosquito control measures to contribute towards malaria elimination.
In early February, clashes in South Sudan led to a new influx of refugees into DRC, particularly in the Kakwa and Kaliko chiefdoms in Aru Territory, Ituri Province.
Arrivals of Central African refugees slowed down compared to January. In February, 30 crossed into Ndu, Bas Uele Province, in addition to 235 who crossed in January.
UNHCR’s cash assistance for IDPs, returnees and refugees in DRC grew considerably in 2018, with USD 3.4 million spent. This is a 261% increase from 2017 and an 882% increase from 2016.
This update concerns the situation of Congolese refugees and asylum seekers in countries in the region.

Luanda - Two helicopters from Angola flying troops specialised in search and rescuing operations in difficult access areas reached Monday Maputo, Mozambique, Angola’s Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta confirmed Monday.
The Minister also announced the arrival in Mozambique – hit by powerful tropical storm – of a fourth plane with 52 tons of goods (medicines and expendable supplies), two ambulances and four 4-wheel drive vehicles to ensure the mobility of the teams.
Beira - Angola’s assistance made up of 26 tons of food and medicines to Tropical Cyclone Idai victims in Mozambique will help prevent the spread of the epidemics in the Indian Ocean country, the Health minister of Mozambique Nazira Abdula said Friday in Beira city.
Nazira Abdula was speaking to the press shortly after the delivery ceremony of the goods and the introduction of medical and military teams from Angola.
