The Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) enables the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to take rapid and effective action in response to food and agricultural threats and emergencies.

The Fund has three components:

(i) a working capital component to advance funds once a resource partner's commitment is secured toward the immediate procurement of inputs to protect livelihoods, restart agricultural activities or contribute to an immediate response to a crisis;

Southern Africa is projected to be one of one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change. Floods and cyclones affected several countries and more than 400,000 people across the region were affected in 2018. The estimated population in the sub region is over 340 million. With 60 per cent of the population living in urban areas, this rise in urbanization means more youth are living in towns where employment opportunities are limited leading to increased crime and other socio – economic development challenges.

Executive summary

Many SADC Member States recorded normal to above-normal rainfall during the 2017/18 rainfall season, as predicted by the SADC Climate Services Centre (CSC) in August 2017 at the 21st Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-21). In contrast, the approaching October 2018 - March 2019 rainfall season is forecasted to be normal to below-normal throughout the season over most of the region.

INTRODUCTION

The Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) has been a gamechanger for WHO. It allows WHO to respond rapidly to disease outbreaks and health emergencies - often in 24 hours or less. This saves lives and helps prevent unnecessary suffering. Furthermore, a quick response dramatically reduces the costs of controlling outbreaks and emergencies, as well as the wider social and economic impacts.

This assessment took into consideration that, with eight million inhabitants, North Kivu is one of the most densely populated provinces in the country. North Kivu borders four other provinces (Ituri, South Kivu, Maniema and Tshopo), as well as Uganda and Rwanda.

Luanda - The reforestation of eucalyptus trees in Luanda's urban district of Rangel can help combat groundwater, avoiding floods and damage caused by this phenomenon, environmentalist Simão dos Santos said Monday.

Speaking to the press on the sideline of the launch of the environmental education project "Community without garbage, more health", held in Luanda, the environmentalist stressed that among the specificity of eucalyptus is the ability to absorb 200 liters of water per day.
