Pioneering technology will help eliminate landmines across Africa and Asia helping the world’s most vulnerable communities access safe land.

New UK aid funded technology, including radar detectors, will help trace ammunition in the equivalent of more than 16,000 football pitches. Remote controlled machines, such as the Mine Wolf, will also help clear cluster bombs more rapidly.

Manufactured in Newcastle, the eight-tonne Mine Wolf is a remote-controlled mine-clearing machine used in high risk areas. It can clear up to 12,000 square metres a day.

  • A total of 873 suspected cases of cholera were reported in Uige province, including 13 deaths up from January to 20 April 2018. A total of 493 children under 14 were affected of whom 288 were girls and 205 boys. Additionally, 50 suspected cases of cholera and 2 death were reported in Cabinda province. After an effective initial response, case numbers have reduced to less than 3 cases per week.

President’s Malaria Initiative by the Numbers

Introduction

Despite remarkable progress in recent years, malaria remains a leading cause of sickness and death across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria disproportionately impacts the rural poor, typically people who must walk for miles to seek treatment. It is also a leading cause of absenteeism among employees, increased health care spending, decreased productivity, and approximately 50 percent of all preventable school absences in Africa. Malaria helps to trap families in a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.

More than 13.1 million people urgently require humanitarian assistance throughout the country and violence has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, including some 750,000 who have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
