Uíge - At least fifteen people died from cholera in Uíge province in the last ten months from the 1,500 cases of this disease reported in the region, said the director of the Provincial Health Office in Uíge, Madalena Diogo.

According to the official, from December 2017 to June of this year, 899 cases were registered by the health authorities, causing thirteen deaths. As early as September of this year, with the outbreak of the disease, there have been 156 cases and two deaths to date, totalling 1,055 cases.

Furthermore, the forecasts suggest a likelihood of a weak to moderate El Niño event. Historically El Niño climatic conditions have resulted in reduced rainfall across the southern part of Southern Africa.

Lubango - The United Nations Population and Development Fund (UNDP) has available US $ 465 million for drought-resilient projects in the provinces of Huíla, Namibe and Cunene in favor of 1.1 million people of the country’s southern region.

This was announced Friday to the press in Lubango by UNDP Angola director, Henrik Fredborg Larsen, who is on a working visit to Huíla adding that the project to be implemented until 2030, has made available this year 22% of the total value.

Lovua hosts the Lovua settlement, where close to 15,000 Congolese refugees live.

  • At least 347,100 Congolese have returned from Angola since 1 October 2018, according to the 'Direction Générale de Migration' (DGM) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Caritas, which is monitoring the return on the ground, estimates an even higher number of returnees (half a million people). Angolan authorities had set an ultimatum to all persons with an irregular migrant status to leave the country within 15 days, classifying the operation as targeting illegal immigration and illegal exploitation of informal mines.

On 20 October, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) distributed 250 dignity kits to refugees in Lovua Settlement in Angola, where there are currently more than 14,000 Congolese refugees.
Dignity kits, commonly known as "Lodi" in Lovua, contain hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, sanitary pads and underclothes and are for women and girls of reproductive age. The duration of the kits depends on the user and family of the user. To aid UNFPA with the distribution, there is a team of 23 refugee UNFPA mobilisers such as Mama Marie-Claire.

Malanje - At least 306 people have made homeless as result of devastating floods in the municipalities of Calandula and Luquembo, northern Malanje province, on 15 - 22 October, fire-fighters have said.

The floods destroyed 36 homes, a primary school and two churches, according to a weekly report.

On the other hand, the Firefighters have extinguished two small fires, caused by the short-circuit and gas leakage.
