More than 52 million people in 18 countries across southern, eastern and central Africa are facing up to crisis levels of hunger as a result of weather extremes, compounded by poverty and conflict.

Some areas are facing a second extreme drought in four years and worse than that sparked by El Nino in 1981.

  1. Heavy rainfall was reported in northern Ghana and bordering areas of Burkina Faso.

  2. The Ubangui River has triggered flooding along the river basin into northern and western Democratic Republic of Congo last week.

  3. Flooding will continue this week due to saturated ground conditions and continued rainfall in the Afar region of Ethiopia, eastern South Sudan, and the border of Ethiopia and Sudan.

Brazzaville, 24 October 2019 - In another historic step for humanity towards a world free of polio, an independent commission of experts today certified - on World Polio Day - that the second of three types of the wild poliovirus had been eradicated globally.

There are three individual and immunologically distinct wild poliovirus types: wild poliovirus type 1, type 2 and type 3. All have identical symptoms and cause irreversible paralysis or even death. Genetic and virologic differences in the three types mean that they are three separate viruses.

  3. Central Nigeria has experienced significant flooding over the past two weeks and remains at risk for continued flooding next week.

Highlights

Despite the critical role that water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), waste disposal and environmental cleaning services play in the continuum of healthcare, access to WASH services globally remains alarmingly poor.

UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office conducted a regional scoping study and deep dive on the enabling environment for WASH services in health care facilities across its 21 programming countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

  • A circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) has been confirmed in China. It is genetically linked to a VDPV2 isolated from an environmental sample from Xinjiang province, collected on 18 April 2018. WHO is continuing to evaluate the situation and stands ready to support the ongoing investigation and risk assessment by national authorities.
