Southern Africa observes a poor start to the rainy season, while high flood risk persists across East Africa

  1. Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Accra, Ghana last week.

  2. Rising water levels in the Ubangui River triggered flooding along the river basin into northern and western DRC 3. Heavy rainfall during the past couple of months has significantly raised water levels in the Nile River and its tributaries in Sudan and South Sudan triggering floods.

More than 52 million people in 18 countries across southern, eastern and central Africa are facing up to crisis levels of hunger as a result of weather extremes, compounded by poverty and conflict.

Some areas are facing a second extreme drought in four years and worse than that sparked by El Nino in 1981.

Despite the critical role that water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), waste disposal and environmental cleaning services play in the continuum of healthcare, access to WASH services globally remains alarmingly poor.

UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office conducted a regional scoping study and deep dive on the enabling environment for WASH services in health care facilities across its 21 programming countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

• The 2018/19 season, the driest season since at least 1981 in central and western parts of the region, was marked by delayed and erratic onset of rains, midseason dry spells, and early cessation of rains. From October 2018 to early April 2019, parts of southern Angola, northern Namibia, southern Botswana, northern South Africa, southern Zambia and northern Zimbabwe registered significantly below average rainfall (50%~ below average, Figure 1).
