Overall, the 2006/07 agricultural season has started relatively well thanks to favourable rainfall in most of the southern African region. However, late or insufficient rainfall and poor distribution may affect yields and area planted, potentially affecting final harvest prospects in southern and central Mozambique, southern Zambia, parts of southern Zimbabwe, among others. Uíje, 12/31 - A total of 93,119 children received vaccination against various diseases this year in routine campaigns at Negage district, some 37 kilometres of Uije city, northern Angolan province, under the Broad Vaccination Programme (PAV), Angop learnt.

According to PAV supervisor in Negage, Henrique Augusto, 39,781 children received poliomyelitis vaccine, 31.050 against blindness, 18.107 against measles and 1.581 against tuberculosis, in various districts of the province.

Luanda, 29.12.06 (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will close its office in Bié province by the end of 2006, ending more than two and a half decades of ICRC presence in the city of Kuito.

The ICRC will close its office in Bié province, but will not stop its activities. The province of Bié will continue to receive ICRC support from its office in Huambo.

The ICRC started its activities in the province of Bié in April 1981, with a nutritional evaluation team.

Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975. The internal conflict that ensued continued until 2002 and forced nearly 450 thousand refugees out of the country. AAR JAPANconducted surveys on the situation surrounding the returnees and established the AAR JAPAN Angola office in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in November 2003. We remain the only Japanese NGO in Angola.

Uige, 12/28 - A total of 277 people are believed to have been diagnosed with trypanosomiasis in 2006, in northern province of Uige, three of which were reported dead, said a source from the disease treatment centre.

According to the chief of the mobile and fix teams of the local centre, Afonso Bernardo Monteiro, 78 persons out of the above mentioned figure responded to the treatment and 20 patients are still interned in local centres.

Huambo, 12/28 - The cholera outbreak in central Huambo province has reportedly spread into the urban zone of the city over the last 24 hours, said Thursday a health source.

The disease has already claimed 26 lives out of 328 recorded cases, it has been reported.

Lubango, 12/26 - At least ten new cases of cholera, with one death, have been notified in the last four days at Humpata Municipal Hospital, 22 kilometres off Lubango city, southern Huila province.

According to the head nurse of the local health centre, Jo=C6o Baptista, five people are still hospitalised the remaining have been discharged this morning.

Since the outbreak of cholera in Humpata district, there were reported 39 cases, ten of them have died and 20 have been cured.

Luanda, 12/25 - The central management of the Army General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) will continue supporting the war disabled people, affirmed Sunday at Funda, Cacuaco district, FAA chief general Francisco Pereira Furtado.

General Furtado made this announcement at the ceremony that marked on Sunday his visit to the army's disabled persons centre that served to hand over material stimulus namely TV sets, clocks, radio sets and a water tanker.

Uige, 12/24 - Around 32 cases of cholera were registered in the province of Uige during the last eight days by the health authorities.

According to Kunzica Duarte, a nurse of Uige Provincial Hospital, 185 cases were Notified in the first fortnight of December.

Kunzica Duarte added also that in the next days the cases might increase, considering that the authorities have been recording an average of five cases per day.

Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) is the application of safe insecticides to the indoor walls and ceilings of a home or structure in order to interrupt the spread of malaria by killing mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite.

There are two major themes running through this issue of Field Exchange. The first is a focus on Southern Africa and the programmatic challenges presented by HIV/AIDS and the second concerns infant and young child feeding in emergencies (IFE). An extended visit to South Africa over the summer by ENN co-director, Marie McGrath, offered the opportunity to visit several collaborative WFP programmes in Swaziland and Namibia and also to identify significant HIV-related research in the region.

World Vision Angola today (Friday) launched a $200,000 crisis response to the resurgence of cholera in Huambo city.

Angola's Ministry of Public Health asked the NGO to help with a public education and communication campaign, while supporting surveillance teams in controlling and treating cholera outbreaks in the city, the peri-urban areas around, and 10 municipalities in the province.

NANGWESHI, Zambia, December 21 (UNHCR) - The UN refugee agency on Thursday handed over the facilities in Nangweshi Refugee Camp to the Zambian government, marking the formal end of a camp that had been established seven years ago to house Angolans fleeing their civil war.

The closing of the camp and the transfer of assets worth almost US$500,000 was made possible by a combination in recent months of repatriation of some Angolan refugees and the relocation of others to another refugee settlement, Mayukwayukwa, where they have a chance to become self-sufficient through agriculture.

JOHANNESBURG, 21 December (IRIN) - Health organisations in Angola are scrambling to identify a disease that has surfaced in Uige Province, in the north, and in Huila Province, in the south, to prevent further transmission and treat fatally ill patients - half of whom have already died.

Summary and implications

Food security remains stable in most of the country including areas affected by a dry spell in early 2006 (see figure 1), where poor households have only limited food reserves following a poor harvest. Most households have exhausted their food reserves and are selling livestock, labor and forest products to generate income to buy food in local markets. Food security is expected to deteriorate in localized areas of central Angola (see figure 1) especially for returning refugees that have not been able to plant a crop this season.

Benguela, 12/21 - At least eleven people died, all victims of cholera, out of 131 cases notified by Ganda municipal hospital, coastal Benguela province from 6th December.

Angop has learnt that about 42 patients are still in the hospital.

The local authorities are worried about this situation and five working commissions have been created in the affected communities to educate and sensitise the population on first aid and basic sanitary measures to stop the spreading of the disease in the region.

Lobito, 12/21 - The provincial governor of Benguela, Dumilde Rangel, praised Thursday, here, the soldiers of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) for their intervention in the fight against cholera and the vaccination campaign of polio.

The governor who was speaking in the regional act that marked the 14th anniversary of the Army, celebrated on December 17, said that the various tasks implemented by the Government were successfully executed with the support from FAA soldiers. He recognised the contribution rendered by the Armed Forces in the landmines clearance programme.
