Cahama - At least 2,400 tonnes of assorted foodstuffs arrived last Tuesday afternoon at Cahama Municipality, southern Cunene Province, to support more than 800,000 drought victims.

It is the second batch of food aid sent under the Head of State’s initiative, to respond to the effects of the drought that has ravaged the southern part of the country since October 2018.

In the first batch there were 300 tonnes of miscellaneous goods.

Among the food aid it is included cornmeal, oil, rice, salt, milk, biscuits, juice and canned food.

Luanda - At least 2,400 tons of miscellaneous food products went this Saturday to Curoca municipality, Cunene province, to help the drought-stricken populations of that southern region.

The Civil Protection and Fire Service spokesman, Faustino Sebastião, indicated that the basic basket food consists of cornmeal, oil, rice, salt, milk, crackers, juices and canned food.

According to a spokesman for the Civil Protection and Fire Department in Huila, third assistant Chief, Inocêncio Hungulo, a lightning struck a house on the Kalepi plateau in Alto-Chiva, causing the death of the couple and three underage children.

The incident also resulted in the injury of a relative who was on visit.

The official said the locality has experienced heavy rains in recent days and is devoid of lightning rods, being a plateau zone and prone to lightning.

Ondjiva - Seven families were left homeless in Ondjiva, Cunene Province, as a result of the destruction of the roof of their homes caused by heavy rain over the last 24 hours.

According to the commander of the Cunene Civil Protection and Fire Service, Paulo Calunga, who was taking stock of the damage caused by the rain that has occurred since 2:58 pm on Tuesday, seven homes were affected in the neighborhoods of Ondjiva.

In the municipality of Cuanhama, 21 electric poles fell, causing a blackout in some neighborhoods of Ondjiva, and 10 trees fell also.

ANGOP got informed that the few hours rain has partially destroyed seven houses, flooded completely some roads and commercial stores, besides causing the fall of ten trees.

Luanda - The United States government made available $10 million this year in the fight against AIDS in Angola.

Investment in facilities supported by the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Angola, states a press release sent to ANGOP, has the capacity to cover approximately 85,000 Angolans affected by the virus.

Angola has an estimated HIV prevalence of 2.0% in people aged between 15 and 49, according to the Multiple Health Indicators Survey (2015-16), which gives an estimated 310,000 people living with HIV in the country.

ONGWEDIVA – Hepatitis E cases have spiked dramatically over the last couple of years, with health officials declaring 1 635 confirmed cases as at 10 November this year. The outbreak has claimed 56 lives, while a significant 6 672 cases have been reported since the outbreak started in December 2017. Of the 1 635 confirmed cases, Erongo Region is leading with 460 cases, while Khomas and Omusati have 351 and 169 cases, respectively. Khomas, however, has the highest reported cases with 4 179, followed by Erongo and Omusati with 1 525 and 269, respectively.

Luanda - At least forty four cases of polio were reported this year in Angola, Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta said on Friday at the opening of the First Round of Vaccination in the Monte Belo district of Cacuaco in Luanda.

According to the official, the occurrences happended in the provinces of Bié, Malanje and Lunda Sul (one case each), Moxico and Benguela (two), Huíla (three), Lunda Norte (four), Luanda (six), Huambo (11 ) and Cuanza Sul (13).

Ondjiva - The laying of the first stone and the allocation of the works to the contractor for the start of structural projects turned to the fight against the drought hitting the southern Cunene Province happens this Friday in Cufo locality.

Luanda - The second stage of polio vaccination campaign is kicking off this Friday in five provinces of Angola, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

The sanitary authorities said they expect to vaccinate over two million children from zero to five years old in Luanda, Bengo, Benguela, Huambo and Cuanza Norte.

Luanda with roughly eight million inhabitants expects to vaccinate over 1.6 million children.

The vaccination campaign will happen on November 15-17 with assistance of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), the Health Ministry has said.
