Dundo - Angola government is committed to providing security to refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), based in the eastern province of Lunda Norte.

Angola’s pledge was reaffirmed Wednesday by the province's governor Ernesto Muangala, adding that the country has created conditions for education and access to drinking water for DRC refugees.

Muangala was speaking at the Lóvua settlement, 80 kilometers from the provincial capital Dundo, during a ceremony that marked World Refugee Day, June 20.

Luanda - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has acknowledged Angola’s role in protecting the refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), based in the eastern Lunda Norte province.

The recognition came from the UNHCR representative in Angola, Philippa Candler, during a meeting with the president of the 10th Commission on Human Rights, Petitions, Complaints and Suggestions of the Citizens of the National Assembly, Raúl Danda held on Wednesday in Luanda.

Update on rat reinforcements in Angola.

It has been an exciting month for the mine detection rat (MDR) team in Angola as they welcomed 16 new landmine detecting HeroRATs on May 11th. Angolan MDR Supervisor Alfredo Adamo eagerly received the rats and was very pleased to report that they arrived in good health and settled easily into their new home in Uíge Province about 300 kilometers from the capital city of Luanda.

Luanda - At least 1.5 million cases of malaria that resulted in 3,853 deaths were recorded in the six months in Angola, exceeding the 1.3 million cases in 2016 when the country was hit by yellow fever epidemic.

Alike in 2016, the Angolan health authorities described 2018 as an epidemiological year.

The provinces of Cuanza Norte, Bengo and Huambo are the most endemic regions, according to data released by the Secretary of State for Health, José Vieira Dias da Cunha.

Angolan authorities have shut the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Malanje Province to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus, media confirmed.

Malanje Province is located 383km northeast of Luanda and is a major point of interaction between Angolans and the Congolese.

According to VOA Radio, the border points on the Angolan side would have 12 police officers, 12 immigration personnel, four nurses and four firefighters and civil protection services officials to ensure the Ebola virus was not allowed in.

Mbanza Kongo - At least 170 citizens from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were repatriated last weekend by the Migration and Foreigners Service (SME) in northern Zaire province for illegal stay in Angola.

The mentioned foreigners entered the national territory by clandestine routes, escaping the control of Border Guard Police personnel assigned along the border perimeter, said the third deputy head of migration of provincial department of SME, João Lourenço Júnior.

WaPOR: database dissemination portal and APIs

The FAO portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR) monitors and reports on agriculture water productivity over Africa and the Near East.

It provides open access to the water productivity database and its thousands of underlying map layers, it allows for direct data queries, time series analyses, area statistics and data download of key variables associated to water and land productivity assessments.
