Luanda, 17 July 2018 – 17 years ago, I visited the Jesuits in Angola. On our way to a retreat house site outside Luanda, we stopped at Viana, a rural area where JRS was working with refugees from Rwanda and Congo and Angolans displaced by civil war.

17 years later, I visit Viana again. In 2018, Viana is now part of sprawling Luanda, a poor, mixed community of Angolans and refugees. JRS is still there.

Luanda - The reforestation of eucalyptus trees in Luanda's urban district of Rangel can help combat groundwater, avoiding floods and damage caused by this phenomenon, environmentalist Simão dos Santos said Monday.

Speaking to the press on the sideline of the launch of the environmental education project "Community without garbage, more health", held in Luanda, the environmentalist stressed that among the specificity of eucalyptus is the ability to absorb 200 liters of water per day.

OVERVIEW

  • Many countries across the African continent face recurrent complex emergencies, frequent food insecurity, cyclical drought, and sudden-onset disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and storms. In FY 2017, USAID/OFDA continued to respond to urgent needs resulting from disasters and support DRR programs that improve emergency preparedness and response capacity at local, national, and regional levels.

09 July 2018, Gaborone, Botswana - The number of food insecure people in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in the 2018/19 consumption year is 29 million people, representing 14 percent of the population, according to the “State of Food and Nutrition Insecurity and Vulnerability in Southern Africa” report. The report was compiled from results of the 2018 vulnerability assessments and analysis of 11 SADC Member States. The number of the food insecure population is 13 percent higher, compared to last year, 2017/8.

Luanda - Although the situation of cholera is not alarming, the Provincial Government of Luanda Friday held a multisectoral meeting to strengthen measures to combat this disease, within the framework of the guidelines of the Interministerial Commission to Combat Cholera and Malaria, headed by the minister of health, Sílvia Lutucuta.
At the meeting, guided by the acting provincial governor, Júlio Bessa, strategies were developed for the prevention and cutting of cholera spread, especially where there was a heap of garbage.
