Most households in Southern Africa depend on maize as their main source of food and energy, given the high volumes and ease with which it is produced. Alternative food crops that are consumed as substitutes include rice, wheat, sorghum, millet, and tubers such as cassava and potatoes. Consumption of these substitutes occurs mainly when maize is not available or among those households in areas where such substitutes are more easily available (for example, cassava in northern Mozambique).

Rainfall deficits have also increased in the southern region in recent weeks. Vegetation conditions appear to be good, but are expected to deteriorate if this rainfall pattern continues.

Sumbe - The lack of rains in the last days is hampering the harvest of bean and maize in Quibala municipality, central Cuanza Sul province, a situation that worries the small farmers in that region, Angop has learnt on Wednesday.

According to a few peasants, the family agricultural fields, plantations of bean, peanut and maize are getting dry.

To the peasant Manuel José António, if the situation prevails, the collection harvest of maize, bean and cassava will be compromised and food crisis will affect the population again.

Cuito - At least 810 former refugees in central Bie province have in the end of 2014, got free birth registration, reported Tuesday, in Cuito, the provincial head of Justice, Mateus Balanga.
