Uige - At least 109 families were displaced in the Ambuila district, 90 kilometres of north of Uíge city, following of destruction of their homes caused by rain that hit the region on Monday morning, Angop learnt on Tuesday from a source of the local administration.

According to the source, the rain destroyed one school, 18 residences, two churches and other social infra-structures.

The security situation in eastern DRC is still precarious. In addition an outbreak of Ebola has been confirmed in the province of Kasaï Occidental, health zone of Mweka. The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is not yet under control. The outbreak has spread in the Southern African countries. WHO and partners continue to support efforts aimed at information sharing from affected border districts, strengthening surveillance, as well as for resource mobilization.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

Cases of cholera continue to be reported throughout the region. The most critical situation continues to be in Zimbabwe, with more than 20,000 cases recorded. Ongoing migration and trade appear to have led to cholera outbreaks in countries bordering Zimbabwe. In South Africa, indigenous transmission has also become a reality. Zambia, Mozambique and Angola are also suffering from unrelated outbreaks.

Luanda / Geneva (ICRC) - After 30 years of aid work, the sub-delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Huambo, approximately 600 kilometres south-east of the capital Luanda, will close this month.

The sub-delegation was primarily involved in efforts to restore contact between family members separated from one another by the conflict.

Great Lakes: Put the high-flown rhetoric into practice

In December 2006, the 2nd meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) was held in Nairobi, with 11 countries taking part (Angola, Kenya, Uganda, CAR, Congo, Tanzania, Sudan, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda and DRC). The Conference concluded with the signature of a "Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region", which included the creation of a "Special Fund for Reconstruction and Development" and establishing a Secretariat based in Bujumbura.

CONTEXT

Situation in the Southern African Region

Over the past few weeks, suspected cholera cases1 have been reported in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The outbreaks have occurred earlier than usual, before the height of the rainy season. Ongoing migration in the region, principally from Zimbabwe, appears to have led to the outbreak in South Africa, in particular just across the border in Musina town, as well as the suspected cases in Botswana, while in Mozambique there has been some reported cases of cholera in a border province.
