LUANDA, Dec 29 (Reuters) - A senior United Nations official said on Tuesday the wreckage of a plane which crashed in Angola's central highlands on Saturday had been found and there were indications of survivors.

''Some images we have received from the area indicate that the plane which has crashed did not disintegrate. It is there and can be seen, so there is still a chance to save people,'' Issa Diallo, head of the U.N. Observer Mission in Angola (MONUA), said.

JOHANNESBURG (Dec. 29) XINHUA - The wreck of a United Nations chartered aircraft that crashed in eastern Angola Saturday had been seen and appeared to be reasonably intact, the South African embassy in Luanda said Tuesday.

U.N. officials flew over the scene of the crash late Monday and an SOS in Morse code had been received from the plane, South African Press Association quoted a spokesman of the embassy as saying.

But he would not speculate on whether anyone survived.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 29 (Reuters) - The United Nations released the names on Tuesday of the 14 people, 13 men and a Zambian woman police officer, in a U.N. transport plane that crashed in Angola's central highland over the weekend.

U.N. officials have not been able to reach the crash site and do not know if there are any survivors but they held out hope, saying the downed plane spotted from the air appeared not to have disintegrated.

Most of the passengers were part of a 1,000-member peacekeeping operation, known as MONUA, the U.N.

LISBON, Dec 26 (Reuters) - The United Nations said a transport plane with 14 people aboard crashed on Saturday in central Angola, scene of fighting between UNITA rebels and government troops, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

Lusa said the U.N. observation mission in Angola, MONUA, issued a statement in Luanda saying the C-130 plane, carrying 10 passengers and four crew, had caught fire shortly after taking off from the central highland town of Huambo. It gave no further details about the cause of the crash or who was aboard.

NEW YORK, United Nations (PANA, 12/24/98) - Amid intensified fighting between the Angolan government forces and UNITA rebels, the UN Security Council Wednesday demanded for immediate end to hostilities in the country.
The Council, which has met twice in the month on the deteriorating situation in Angola, reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the country's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
