LUSAKA, Zambia, 31 December – Jose Pinto, a refugee for 33 years, can now call Zambia his permanent home after he and his family became the first former Angolan refugees to be granted permanent residency permits by Zambian authorities.

Zambia's Minister of Home Affairs, Edgar Lungu, granted the first three residency permits to Pinto, his wife and their daughter Filipa in a ceremony in the capital Lusaka on 18 December, witnessed by UNHCR and a delegation from the African Union, which supported the local integration process by donating US$100,000.

L'est du pays est demeuré très instable dû à l'insécurité née de la présence des différents groupes armés- au Katanga, la population déplacée interne a quintuplé.

The Joint Assessment Mission (JAM) conducted in September 2012 aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the situation, needs, risks, capacities and vulnerabilities of refugees in Malawi with regard to food, livelihood, their nutritional/health situation and related matters. The current programme is coming to an end, and this JAM Report aims to provide information for further assistance through the design of a new programme cycle for both WFP (the PRRO) and UNHCR. The last JAM was carried out in 2009 in coordination with the GoM and other stakeholders.

CAPANDA, Angola, Dec 28 2012 (IPS) - “We never used to eat carrots, but now we like them,” said Rebeca Soba, admiring her vegetable garden, an island of diversity in the midst of a vast sugarcane plantation.

Vegetable gardening has been introduced at the Capanda Agroindustrial Pole (PAC) as a source of income for local small farmers.

The vegetable gardens are part of a social programme, Kulonga pala Kukula (“education for development” in Kimbundu, the local African language), which also includes actions to promote health, water availability and education.

The new funding brings the Commission's humanitarian aid in the region to €33 million for this year.

The Fund will be financed with an initial grant contribution of EUR 10 million by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW. As a category 4 storm, Evan caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure on both islands. 3,500 people were evacuated to emergency shelters in Fiji. In Samoa 1,500 were evacuated and 2 killed.Typhoon Bopha (Pablo) made landfall in the southern Philippines on 4 December, carrying winds of up to 160 kilometres an hour.
