Luanda - The first phase for statistics assessment of landmines victims in Angola starts in september, the acting coordinator of the sub-commission for assistance of landmines victims, Elsa Neto, disclosed today.

The project launched by the National Inter-sectorial Commission on Demining and Humanitarian Assistance aims to know the real number of landmine victims in Angola and their life conditions to facilitate the implementation of the full reintegration programs.

"The project aims at gathering and updating the data of landmine victims all over the country.

Lubango - The National Demining Institute (INAD) destroyed at the weekend at Caconda municipality, 247 kilometres north off Lubango, province of Huila 1,274 explosive devices.

The information was given on Monday to Angop by the local supervisor of INAD, Bernardo dos Santos Gonçalves who said that among the lethal material were 37 projectiles, 96 mortars of 82 and 60 millimetres, 15 hand-grenades, 11 anti-personnel and 2 anti-tank landmines, 183 sorts of bullets.

Au 02 septembre 2009 un total de 6 265 cas a été confirmé dans 22 pays africains avec 35 décès. L'Afrique du Sud porte le plus lourd fardeau avec 94% de l'ensemble des cas. Les autres préoccupations humanitaires demeurent les épidémies les urgences complexes dans les pays d'Afrique centrale et la crise alimentaire dans la corne de l'Afrique.

General Context

The Pandemic A (H1N1) is now well established in our Region and the communities. The number of confirmed cases continues to rise. As of 2nd September 2009 a total of 6,265 cases were confirmed in 22 African countries with 35 deaths. South Africa is still carrying the bulk with 94% of the case load. Other humanitarian concerns include disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

Luanda - At least 468 disabled people all victims of landmines were rehabilitated in the past two years with the support of the National Association of the Angolan Disabled People (ANDA).

Luanda - Poland maintains cooperation with Angola in the heath sector since the 90s by funding the construction of a health centre in Kifangondo locality, Cacuaco district, in Luanda province, being the biggest project in this area.

Kuito - The Provincial Management of Health in central Bié province notified in the first half of this year, 155,482 new cases of malaria, among them 4,776 in newborn children, informed this Thursday, official chief of public health and endemic control, Enoque Chivala.

Ondjiva - At least 99 cases of measles were diagnosed in the districts of Kwanhama, Cahama, Coroca in southern Cunene province, between the second fortnight of July and August 23.

As of 25th of August 2009 a total of 5,967 cases were confirmed in 21 African countries with 25 deaths. South Africa continues to be of high concern with 94% of the case load. The WHO advice to the public is not to panic but to take necessary preventive measures such as hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette in households, the community, health care facilities as well as in other settings where people gather.

Ondjiva - At least 3,200 explosive devices have been removed and destroyed in Cunene province, from January to July this year, by demining brigade of Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).

The information was given this Monday to Angop, by the commander of the brigade, Jorge António "Jojó", to whom at this period were taken off 1,250 anti-personnel and 57 anti-tank landmines.

There were also destroyed several hand grenades, ammunition, mortars of 60-80 mm and diverse projectiles, at the districts of Kwanhama, Ombadja and Namacunde.
