About 70 countries remain affected by landmines, which claimed nearly 5,200 casualties around the world last year.

report Xinhua

BEIJING, Nov 07, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- For children living in peace, war is the stuff of fast-paced action movies or high-adrenaline computer games. Yet today, an astounding figure released by UNICEF shows that more than 250,000 children are fighting in wars and armed conflicts worldwide and witnessing atrocities.

From the "little bees" of Colombia to the "baby brigades" of Sri Lanka, boys and girls, some as young as six, have been transformed into small but highly efficient killing machines.

But what happens to child soldiers when the guns fall silent?

NEW YORK / GENEVA - Global campaigns to fight diarrhoea - the second deadliest illness for children - must be re-energized to prevent the deaths of millions in the developing world, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) said today as they released a new report on the disease.

"It is a tragedy that diarrhoea, which is little more than an inconvenience in the developed world, kills an estimated 1. 5 million children each year," said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman.

Korab Mula (27) from Albania lost his two arms and injured both legs when he stepped on a mine and then fell on another one in June 2000. With international assistance, he was fitted with conventional prosthetic arms, but they give him problems and he cannot use them which has caused him to feel dejected and depressed. Only with more advanced electronic prostheses, which are not available in Albania, does Korab stand a realistic chance to train up for a job, and even get married.

Zinc Seen as Breakthrough Cure for Diarrhea

Sogola, Mali-Generations of residents have watched their children fall ill each rainy season with diarrhea, which kills an astonishing 1.6 million children under 5 every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)-more than either malaria or AIDS. It also stunts growth, and forces millions-adults and children alike-to spend weeks at a time off work or school.

But USAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other groups have begun distributing zinc supplements to villagers in Bangladesh, India, Mali, …
