INTRODUCTION
This is the third and final issue in 2001 of this quarterly report prepared by the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) on the food supply situation, cereal import and food aid requirements for all countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The report is designed to provide the latest analysis and information on the food situation in these countries to governments, international organizations and other institutions engaged in humanitarian operations.

The Landmine Update is the International Campaign to Ban Landmines’ quarterly newsletter. This edition is followed by a calendar of upcoming events and list of available new resources. To date, 142 countries have signed the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, and 122 have ratified it. The most recent accession is Nigeria (27 September) and the most recent ratification is Algeria (9 October).

Population Movements
During 2001, more than 507,000 persons may have been forced from their homes by war-related violence, bringing the total number of persons reportedly displaced since the resumption of hostilities in January 1998 to approximately 3.5 million. Of this number, 1.36 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been confirmed by humanitarian partners and are receiving assistance. Provinces with the largest concentrations of displaced persons include Bié, Huíla, Huambo and Kuanza Sul.

Introduction
The aim of this document is to look at the system of diamond controls currently being implemented in Angola and to evaluate whether effective implementation is possible in an industry sector that is notorious for smuggling and where there is resistance to legal systems such as export regimes and the payment of taxes. Global Witness carried out an independent review in Angola to provide the Kimberley Process, and the wider international community, with a detailed understanding of the measures being adopted in Angola.

JOHANNESBURG, 24 December (IRIN) - Angola's peace process took a tentative step forward on Friday when UN Under-Secretary-General Ibrahim Gambari revealed that the government was ready to allow the United Nations to resume its role of mediator, and to get UNITA rebel leader Jonas Savimbi back to the negotiating table.

Highlights

Latest information indicates a slightly larger global cereal output in 2001, of 1 870 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms). However, even at this level, production would still be less than the anticipated utilization requirements in 2001/02, leading to a significant draw-down of cereal stocks.

While Afghanistan currently faces a grave food supply situation, food emergencies persist in many other countries (see box on page 6).
