HARARE, Zimbabwe (PANA) - A contingent of 17 Zimbabwe police officers left Harare Friday for peacekeeping and observer duties in Angola.

officially integrated into the Angolan armed forces in a ceremony in Luanda
The ceremony took place in the presence of the United Nations secretary general's special representative in Angola, Alioune Blondin Beye, the Angolan minister of national defence, General Pedro Sebastiao and the chief-of-staff of the army, General Joao De Matos.

MILITARY THREAT REMAINS DESPITE UNITED NATIONS
The United Nations Security Council meeting on 11 December confirmed the planned withdrawal of its peacekeeping force from Angola, despite the continued threat to peace from UNITA's substantial clandestine army.
ROME, Dec 13 (Reuter) - The U.N. World Food Programme on Friday said one of its staff in Angola had been killed in an attack by men in military uniform.
A statement by the Rome-based agency named the victim as Jorge Leitao. He was 31.
Leitao died in the attack on Wednesday on a road between Ndalatando and Ngonguembo, east of the capital Luanda, while travelling by car with three other people.
''They came upon four men in military uniforms. As they passed, one of the men raised his gun and fired. Mr Leitao was fatally wounded in the head.

The Security Council this evening extended the mandate of the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM III) until 28 February 1997 and approved the Secretary-General's recommendation to resume withdrawal of UNAVEM III formed military units during February 1997.
According to resolution 1087 (1996), adopted unanimously, the pace of UNAVEM's withdrawal would be commensurate with progress achieved in the quartering areas, in demobilization and in the extension of State administration throughout Angola.

NEW YORK -- Amnesty International (AI) has reiterated a call to the United Nations that the world body make sure that human rights are at the top of its agenda in the final stages of the Angola peace process.
In a news release December 5, the human rights monitoring organization pointed out that "human rights abuses by both sides over the years have led to a profound mistrust.

a) Demobilisation process of UNITA rebels seriously behind schedule. Prolongation of quartering means food resources for the WFP emergency operation close to depletion. Donor contributions requested to ensure smooth continuation of support by WFP to the quartering areas through January 1997.
b) Pledges also needed on urgent basis to continue projects under WFP PRO 5602 to displaced and war affected people.
