YOKOHAMA– The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a total of US$69 million in funding from the Government of Japan to provide vital food, nutrition and resilience building support in 28 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Of the total contributions, US$18 million will be used to continue to support vulnerable families in Yemen where over 20 million people are struggling to meet their daily food needs.

Highlights

More than 1,810 cholera / AWD cases including 14 deaths have been reported in 8 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR); with an average Case Fatality Rate of 0.8%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Kenya accounts for 49.2 % (890) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 31.4% (569). Highest Case Fatality Rates (CFR) in 2019 have been recorded in Uganda (5.7%) and Zimbabwe (5.1%).

The Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) enables the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to take rapid and effective action in response to food and agricultural threats and emergencies.

The Fund has three components:

(i) a working capital component to advance funds once a resource partner's commitment is secured toward the immediate procurement of inputs to protect livelihoods, restart agricultural activities or contribute to an immediate response to a crisis;

As of 31 January 2019, 825,002 Congolese refugees are being hosted in African countries. In January 2019 alone, some 6,318 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in refugee flows to Uganda, Zambia and Kenya.

The GHO published on 4 December 2018 announced funding requirements of $21.9 billion for 21 Humanitarian Response Plans and the Venezuela Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan (RMRP). With the inclusion of the Zimbabwe Flash Appeal last month, funding requirements for UN-led appeals as at end February amounted to $22.42 billion.

Of 138.8 million people estimated to be in need of assistance, the humanitarian response plans envisage assisting 103.7 million.

Armed clashes in South Sudan forced hundreds of South Sudanese people to seek refuge in border areas in Ituri Province, DRC. UNHCR will support the registration of refugees and their possible relocation.

Seven primary schools were rehabilitated in Kasai Province, benefitting over 3,000 children.
Voluntary Repatriation of Rwandan refugees resumed with 94 repatriations from North and South Kivu Provinces.
