Introduction

  1. The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) was launched in 2003 with the strategic goal of achieving full access to safe, adequate and affordable water supply and sanitation for rural areas in Africa by 2025. The RWSSI targets for 2015 are aligned with the MDG targets of 70% and 62% access to water supply and sanitation, respectively. This report updates stake holders on the progress made in 2013.

The African Development Bank, renewed its support for climate change resilience in Madagascar, Benin and Angola in accessing US $17.8 million of adaptation finance in the form of grants from the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) during the second quarter of 2013. It follows the approval last March of US $18.6 million for three water and sanitation projects.

Sub-Saharan Africa witnessed unprecedented declines in child mortality over the past two decades. The average child mortality rate decreased from 174 per 1,000 in 1990 to 121 per 1,000 in 2010 and the rate of decline has increased from 1.9 percent a year over 1990–2000 to 2.5 percent a year over 2000–2010 according to UNICEF. Research shows that there is an accelerated decline in child mortality and in 34 countries of the region and the rate of decline increased during the MDG period from 2000 as compared to the previous decadei.

With a coastline stretching 1,650 km, Angola is rich in marine fisheries resources. The country's fisheries sector is potentially one of its most economically viable industries and currently ranks third after oil and diamond mining. The sector provides about half of the animal protein consumed in the country.

However, the Angolan artisanal fisheries sector, which provider's most of the fish consumed locally, is constrained by an unfavourable environment - the lack of fish processing space, market infrastructure and equipment.
