Highlights

• In 2018, 319,726 children under the age of five were screened for malnutrition and 74,871 treated for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in drought affected areas and in Lovua settlement, where refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are located.

• With UNICEF support, 2,731 household latrines and showers were built for all refugees living in Lovua settlement, and 87,500 people gained access to safe water through water points and handpumps in droughtaffected areas.

Highlights
- 7 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 941 cholera cases and 8 deaths with an average Case Fatality Rate of 0.9%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Apart from Kenya, outbreaks from the rest of the countries spilled over from 2018. Kenya accounts for 60.8% (572) of the total cases reported this year, followed by Somalia at 21% (198). In 2019, highest Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has been recorded in Zimbabwe at 8.9%.

Highlights

5 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 198 cholera / AWD cases and 3 deaths with an average Case Fatality Rate of 1.5%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Kenya accounts for 58 % (115) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Burundi at 18.7 % (37).

Until a few years ago, no one had heard of the Kasai, then one of the most peaceful provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Since August 2016 however, this safe haven has become synonymous with atrocities and unspeakable violence. Hundreds of thousands of people had to flee to save their lives; their children were used to fight and kill; and schools and healthcare centres were destroyed, pillaged, or burned.

Highlights

Cholera continues to represent a major public health concern in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR). From January to December 2018, approximately 37,565 cases and 443 cholera-related deaths were reported in the region with an average CFR of 1.2%. These cases emerged from 10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR).

These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe accounts for 28.6 % (10,529) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 17% (6,273).

Eastern and Southern Africa is home to more than 60 per cent of children and adolescents living with HIV. This is the region where most progress in the HIV response has been made. Coverage of maternal antiretroviral treatment for pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV reached 93 per cent in this region in 2017. Sustaining these gains and continuing to reach children, adolescents and women at risk and living with HIV is critical. In 2017, an estimated 120,000 adolescents aged 10–19 years and 94,000 children aged 0–9 years were newly infected with HIV.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Climate Prediction Centre is predicting El Niño climatic conditions during the main 2018-19 growing season with 70-75% probability while IRI has increased the probability to more than 85%. Furthermore, the forecasts suggest a likelihood of a weak to moderate El Niño event. Historically El Niño climatic conditions have resulted in reduced rainfall across the southern part of Southern Africa.

CONTEXTE

Durant les trois premières semaines d’octobre 2018, 381 881 congolais refoulés d’Angola, dont un nombre important d’enfants, sont arrivés aux différents points d’entrées dans les territoires de Luiza (Province Kasai Central), Kamonia (Province Kasai) et Kasongo-Lunda (Province Kwango). 80% des expulsés sont entrés par le point de passage de Kamako, les autres par ceux de Tembo (13%) et Luiza (7%). A ce jour, 35 000 personnes sont encore concentrées dans plusieurs sites et familles hôtes a Kamako, la zone la plus affectée.

KINSHASA/DAKAR/NEW YORK/GENEVA, October 30, 2018 – At least 80,000 children recently returned from Angola to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are now in need of humanitarian assistance, UNICEF said today. More than 300,000 Congolese citizens have returned from Angola since 1 October, raising concerns among humanitarian partners of another crisis for a country already dealing with multiple conflicts and an Ebola outbreak.
