During the last few days Angolan security forces have arrested and arbitrarily detained several African nationals who they also subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment. Our organisations condemn these serious violations of migrants’ human rights and urge the Angolan authorities to put an end to this violence and to respect the international and regional legal instruments that Angola has ratified, and also draw the attention of the home countries of these migrants to the gravity of the situation.

  • The Chã das Caldeiras area has been evacuated following the eruption of Pico Fogo Volcano on 23 November an access restricted since 7 December by Civil Protection authorities due to increased volcanic activity.

Mbanza Congo - At least nine hundred and three unexploded ordnance will be demolished on Friday, in the commune of Luvo, Mbanza Congo city, northern Zaire province, by the National Demining Institute (INAD).

According to a note from the provincial department of INAD, delivered to ANGOP, in Mbanza Congo, the material consists anti-personnel landmines, mortar shells, rockets, grenades, TNT block and various ammunition.

• The early stages of the 2014-2015 growing season in Southern Africa were characterized by significant rainfall deficits in an area extending across eastern Zambia, northern Zimbabwe, northeastern Mozambique and Malawi. The crop growing regions of eastern South Africa and Madagascar were also affected. The rainfall deficits led to vegetation levels being significantly depressed across these regions.

Key Messages

  • Rainfall has improved in most of the Southern Livestock, Millet, and Sorghum livelihood zone, with the exception of large parts of Namibe Province, and this is having a positive impact on vegetation conditions. Cattle conditions are also improving, which is encouraging some pastoralists to start returning to their areas of origin.

Luanda - Five 40-foot containers with food and building materials bound for Cabo Verde hit by a volcanic eruption on the archipelago's Fogo Island are being loaded since Thursday onto the Angolan Navy's Rio Mbridge ship, in Luanda, Angop learnt.

The 51 ton-relief include corn flour, rice, beans, sausage, cooking salt and cooking oil, as well as building material comprising zinc sheets, rods and tubes.

The ship is expected to reach Cape Verde within 15 days.

Luanda - The Angolan head of State José Eduardo dos Santos has instructed the Government to immediately send humanitarian relief aid to Cabo Verde hit by a volcanic eruption on the archipelago?s Fogo Island.

The information is contained in a press release that reached Angop on Thursday, stating that the president’s decision follows an appeal from the Cabo Verde’s authorities.

The aid includes civil protection equipment, foodstuffs and construction materials.

Mbanza Congo - Ninety former Angolan refugee families, comprising 334 people, from Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) arrived Thursday in Angola, under the ongoing voluntary and organised repatriation process.

The Angolan citizens came from Low Congo region and Kinshasa, the capital city of DRC.

The former refugees were escorted to sheltering centre of Kinzau, in Mbanza Congo, northern Zaire province.
