Until a few years ago, no one had heard of the Kasai, then one of the most peaceful provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Since August 2016 however, this safe haven has become synonymous with atrocities and unspeakable violence. Hundreds of thousands of people had to flee to save their lives; their children were used to fight and kill; and schools and healthcare centres were destroyed, pillaged, or burned.

Rainfall brings relief to dry conditions across South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Angola

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. An erratic rainfall distribution since the Short-Rains season has caused large seasonal dryness in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

  2. Continued below average rainfall since October has resulted in significant moisture deficits throughout southern Africa.

  3. Several consecutive weeks of poor rainfall has led to anomalous dryness across Madagascar.

More than 7,000 families deported from neighbouring Angola and now back in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have received financial assistance in the border town of Kamako, in Kasai Province. This support will enable them to pay for their travel to be reunited with their loved ones or to improve their living conditions.

Highlights

Cholera continues to represent a major public health concern in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR). From January to December 2018, approximately 37,565 cases and 443 cholera-related deaths were reported in the region with an average CFR of 1.2%. These cases emerged from 10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR).

Ondjiva - At least twenty two anti-tank mines and 10 anti-personnel landmines were deactivated and destroyed in the province of Cunene during the year 2018, the liaison officer of the National Intersectoral Committee on Demining and Humanitarian Assistance (CNIDAH), Mario Satipamba said Friday.

Speaking to ANGOP on the activity of the sector, the official pointed out that in addition to these mines, 407 non-detonable explosive devices and 102,72 ammunition of various caliber weapons were also collected, resulting in the clearance of 2,315 square meters.
