Highlights

World cereal output in 2000 is provisionally estimated at 1 852 million tonnes, up slightly from the forecast in November. The forecast for global cereal utilization has also been adjusted upward to 1 909 million tonnes. The shortfall in production will have to be met by a significant drawdown of global cereal stocks.

NEW YORK, 4 January (Department of Political Affairs) -- Pursuant to paragraph 4 (b) of the note by the President of the Security Council dated 30 October 1998 (S/1998/1016), and after consultations among the members of the Council, it was agreed to elect the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the following sanctions committees for a period running until 31 December 2001:

New York (dpa) - After being accepted into the U.N. Security Council, Norway and Ireland have the difficult tasks of being the future leaders of the committees monitoring U.N. sanctions in Iraq and Angola, respectively.

The two countries were on Monday officially admitted to the council, each for a two-year term. But after the usual bilateral discussions that accompany the beginning of each month, the council on Thursday convened for the first time for joint discussions at U.N.
