Global Environment Facility approves $179 million to support FAO-led projects

14 June 2019, Rome - FAO today welcomed a decision by the Council of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to provide $179 million to support the UN agency's work with countries worldwide at the critical nexus between agriculture and the environment. This includes projects focussed on biodiversity conservation, transboundary water resources management, sustainable land management, highly hazardous pesticide remediation, and climate change adaptation.

Il s’est tenu du 16 au 17 avril 2019, à l’hôtel Radisson Blu à Nairobi au Kénya, la réunion des points focaux gouvernementaux et experts des Etats membres de la CIRGL en matière d’éradication de l’apatridie dans la Région des Grands Lacs.

La première journée a été marquée, outre les allocutions d’usage, par :

1- L’exposé sur les objectifs et résultats attendus du Segment de haut niveau sur l’apatridie qui aura lieu à Genève le 7 octobre 2019 ainsi que l’importance des engagements des Etats membres de la CIGRL pour rester à l’avant-garde de la lutte contre l’apatridie.

Nigeria and the western Gulf of Guinea region continue to receive limited rainfall

  1. Continued belowaverage rainfall and high temperatures have strengthened dryness in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania.

  2. Below-normal rainfall since April has led to significant early-season deficits and abnormal dryness.

  3. Heavy rainfall along the coast of Tanzania has caused flash flooding in Dar es Salaam. Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue next week.

This figure includes voluntary repatriation from Kenya (83,535) and Assisted Spontaneous returnees from Yemen (4,095) as well as 1,348 returnees from other countries such as Djibouti (783), Libya (377), Sudan (143), Eritrea (34), Pakistan, Gambia, Angola, Cambodia and others. Somali refugees from these or other countries who return spontaneously without assistance from the UNHCR are not included.
